Evo Odd Steering Issue
 

Had my power steering bushing work itself out/off at my last track day - I drove it home with the steering pretty wonky, and I ordered a new whiteline kca390 bushing to go on the car after.

After the install, the car's steering wheel had to be kinked left 10-15 degrees to go straight - but only after a hard left. After a hard right, the car's steering could be straight to go straight. Thinking it was an alignment issue, I had the shop realign the car.

Now, the steering wheel has to be kinked right 10-15 degrees to go straight after a hard right. After a hard left, the car's steering wheel can be straight to go straight.

Any idea what is causing this??? bind in the bushing or something??

the rack has to be moving back and forth some how... right?
im assuming its all bolted up tight...

if you jack it up, and lock the steering wheel... then really get agressive trying to move the wheel back and forth.
maybe you can feel it.

the kit you put in, you had to pull the rack out of the cross member and put all that new rubber in .
so just a guess, maybe something wasnt seated correctly when you tightened everything down and now its moving back and forth.

minor update - shop said when they did the bushings they just lowered the subframe a bit, instead of lowering it all the way, maybe something didn't get done correctly in that process?

i haven't gotten under the car yet, hope to soon but life.

The rack is moving, either it's not tight/wrong bushings or they lubed the bushings up.

so this is the kit - it's actually different from my old kca390, which was yellow, i don't know what the two metal bushings are and there used to be discussion about doubling up the washers or something, but idk where that all ended up.

the shop doesn't work on evos often but i figured a power steering bushing would be straightforward enough?

I installed this kit when my motor was out so it was easy for me. From what i remember though those metal cylinders are part of the bushings, the smaller black urethane halves go over the metal cylinders to form the bushing. If your kit didn't have them, and the shop didn't know any better, they might have installed them without the metal inserts and that would cause some problems for sure.

i'm sure he installed it per the instructions, i just personally didn't know what they were for. will keep updated if we see what exactly is causing the movement

I pulled the manual and it is a little vague when it comes to putting those bushings together, but any competent mechanic should be able to figure it out.

The manual does specify in the final step:
"9. Check & re-tension all fittings again after 100 kms but no more than 200 kms."

one of the rack bolts was loose- didn't specify which one, but said it was one that was hiding

I’m glad to hear you found the problem.

Have you noticed any difference with the Whiteline ps rack bushings installed ? Did they make the steering feel even more responsive on the Evo ?
