Green coolant drain hose on firewall

so today while driving I got an huge whiff of coolant smell got home and found it dripping from behind the the transmission transfer case area it is not coming from the back of the head I can confirm this it also just had the head rebuilt by English racing 4 months ago with new gasket and head studs so I topped it with water took it for a drive popped the hood and found green coolant coming from the 90 degree elbow under neath the 2 heat core lines...

the coolent is pretty dripping right below the transmission mount on to the frame area and then dripping to the ground it’s not the throttle body hoses I have confirmed that btw but it is coolant coming from that 90 degree bend I put a white rag under it and it’s green so what would cause this I thought that was a drain for the AC could it be a bad heater core by chance ?

I would like to point out also it’s a pretty good drip I have confirmed it’s green coolant coming from it for sure but can’t figure out why it’s leaking from there.

once the car cools off and the pressure has calmed down it stops leaking so I’m kind of stumped on this one btw the heater blows hot air just fine as does the AC work could it be leaking inside the heater core box then just draining through that elbow ?

Is the fluid coming from these connections here (heater core). Also, item 3 is the heater core
Are you sure the clamps are secure / hoses are not leaking?

No it’s full on dripping like a faucet from the 90 degree angle hose below this 2 hoses those are completely dry I can watch it drip fast enough it’s a free flow almost it it’s dumping onto the frame just behind the transmission I put a white rag under it and it’s green and pretty wet after 10 minutes or so and stinks of coolant...

so my thought is its filling into into the box and draining out that drain hole there is no coolant inside the car the floor is completely dry but idk what else would cause this..
i knkw that’s for condensation for the AC but it’s definitely coolant so I guess the better question is can coolant leak from there because it is for me lol

You noted it smells like coolant. Is your reservoir low? Could it be refrigerant?

Like to see a pic of where youre seeing this leak

Evolevos Mar 16, 2019 03:35 PM

I’ll go snap a picture now it does lose coolant infilled the overflow jug to the max mark and it almost empty it smells like strait coolant and it only does it once the car is warm

Here is a picture of the hose that is draining like I said I put a rag right under it I can watch it flow and once the engine has cooled off it stops i was thinking of splicing the heater core ligns together and seeing if it stops it shouldn’t hurt anything I would think

heres a picture of where it leaks and how much it leaked on the ground in about an hour

btw the leak from underneath is behind the transmission it’s not the head for sure and it’s green coolant from this hose or green something that smells like coolant :(

Certainly appears to be a heater core issue that is draining through the Evap drain tube. Ive never torn into that system but (i think) those 2 cores lie in the same housing. Its a real PITA. Dash comes out!

The fan blower likely blows through both cores & thats why its draining through the evap drain

Evolevos Mar 16, 2019 05:04 PM

But it leaks with no air on also so could it just be the heater core is leaking into the housing and draining down through there ?

Did a little YT'ng just to familairze myself. That center white HVAC box behind the dash houses both of those cores.

Dont take my word for it, but it sure appears like the heater core is leaking into that white housing box & making its way to the firewall drain tube

So an update I grabbed a hose barb conected the 2 heater core hoses and guess what no leaks it’s so heater core it is plus my coolent level stayed the same as where before of 30 minutes of driving it was down half way 😒 not thrilled at all dang car only has 84k on it I got on it pretty good to just to make sure the only coolant I could find dripping this time was from the 2 barbs on the firewall where I disconnected it...
So the better question is how much am I going to pay English racing or some other shop to fix it I already sourced a new heater core so good there but I live in an apartment complex and they really frown on working on cars as in like fine you 100 bucks each time lol

Was your EvO subject to the airbag recall? Dash has to come out for that procedure as well

Evolevos Mar 16, 2019 09:22 PM

Idk if it had the airbag recall done I’ve only had the car for 2 weeks hmmm maybe I can call them and ask them with the vin but it is heavily modded does that matter ?

MinusPrevious Mar 17, 2019 05:18 AM

Yeah, for sure check into that. There is a Mitsu site to check if the recall applies. If you have an 8 you may not need it. Pretty sure all the 9's need it

Call the dealer w/your VIN & im sure they can confirm. My car is modded, as well, but that shouldnt matter. Just make sure they dont do the ECU patch fix which is required as well (tell the service writer NOT to do the ECU patch)

If you need the recall, get a quote on the core replacement. Should be much cheaper being that they will have the dash already removed

Evolevos Mar 17, 2019 09:11 AM

That’s a really good idea man I’m going to shoot them a call tomorrow thanks for the advice I’ll keep this thread updated
