Gas Leak - What's Next?
Brought my Evo 8 in for a minor fuel leak, wet spots on the driveway. Called at the end of the day, didn't see or find any leaks visually, but noted the lines towards the rear were crusty. The car had roughly a quarter tank of gas left in it.
Pick car up, stop off to top off my tank. Driving goes normal, AFRs all good, no smells. Pull into driveway, look underneath, and it is very visibly pissing gas. This is now at a much higher rate than before. Video and photos posted to help show. [as i'm uploading, videos wouldn't upload, so i have some screenshots trying to paint the picture of how far the leak strays from that specific area] Shut the car off immediately, still a steady flow, and then roughly 5 minutes later, a very slow trickle drip that eventually completely stopped. All the lines on the top of the tank are secure and dry, and I'm hoping there's just something simple i completely overlooked. Not too stoked, but staying hopeful and willing to do what we can to keep this car on the road. I appreciate any input or help. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...4527b850c.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...f7674779a.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...900ef3c42.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...f0ceab6f1.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...c1af3a38a.jpeg |
Not sure about the fuel but I'd go ham on that underside with fluid film! Or something better I don't know about and someone here will drop wisdom.

Lines on the top of the tank are leaking, you will want to drop the tank.
Also that is some pretty serious rust on your subframe, that control arm is holding on for dear life. You will want to look into replacing that subframe asap. |

Remove the back seat, remove both inspection covers and look for loose lines or possibly a bad gasket

The subframe is aluminum, it won't rust. If it's the mounts to the body, that could be a major problem. If it's the mustache bar, then just replace it.
I'd do as suggested above and pull both covers and check lines with a flash light. The gasket for the fuel pump hanger doesn't always get installed right after a pump swap. Sometimes studs are broken off of it, so be sure you see nuts all the way around. If none of that helps, get under the car and follow the wet spot up AND along any surfaces where the fuel can run down, before finally dropping to the ground. It sounds like a pretty bad leak and gets worse when the pump ups the pressure. Fix ASAP and do not drive the car. Good luck, dude! |

Looks like a leak from the LR of the fuel tank, where the fuel filler neck hose meets tank. You mentioned this happened after you filled up which makes the most sense.
Either the filler hose where it connects to the tank is leaking, or the tank itself at the filler hose. If it's not leaking while running then it's probably not the pressure/return hard lines on the LF of the tank coming from the hanger. Here are some diagrams: https://ears.ie/vehicle/mitsubishi-e...fillers-pumps/ These are EDM/JDM tanks but still applies. Best course is to drop tank and inspect/clean/replace everything that's failed. In the meantime, your tank will not take a full fill up without leaking. I've been here. |
