I took off my shift knob to hardwire my V1 and now I can't thread the damn thing on straight again. Help! What do I do to get this on straight?
Just a guess - but it sounds like you may have cross-threaded it the first time putting it back on and now the threads are monkey'd. Perhaps someone can suggest how to verify that.

Have you tried several different orientations from the onset?
For example, when you first put the knob on the shifter, try starting with the knob in the 3 o'clock position or 6 o'clock position, etc.

Oh, now I get it - you mean that the imprinting on the knob doesn't line up like it used to? dpardo has the right suggestion for that issue. I thought you meant that the knob wouldn't go on level in relation to the stick.
It depends how many of the threads you have damaged. If it just the first couple, then go to the hardware store, find a nut that fits the shaft, buy a tap that is appropriate and straighten them. BTW – it is going to be metric but I don’t know what size.
If, however you have damaged them all, then find an aftermarket knob you like.

The thread is fine, the damn thing will just never lineup straight again. I have tried every fricking orientation possible. I was hoping to hear something like the top comes off and you can just realign that..
LOL, I just realized I misread your question. I was trying really hard to understand how you had mounted the shift know upside down -- on a vertical plane.
What you are looking for is a way to rotate the knob either an additional 180 or less 180 so that it is snug and shift pattern on the knob is facing the correct direction.
Is it possible that there was a washer that dropped off when you removed the knob? -- I have not removed mine so I can't confirm this washer exists or not. I will check today -- hopefully mine doesn’t end up backwards also.
