Install: Perrin Short Shifter (pics)

First things first: This thing is a ***** to install. It took me half a day to do this, but that’s mostly because I wasn’t prepared for some of the “surprises” along the way. I gotta say though, once you go through the pain with the installation, it’s worth it. The shifts are very smooth and noticeably shorter. Although I wish someone made a full replacement box (like Revo for my RSX). This would make the installation a 45min job.

Here is what you get out of the box:

I will start with the center console already removed (see pic below)as the steps necessary to do this have been covered already by other members. Basically the installation follows the same path as the B&M Short Shifter, so I will only focus on 2 most important issues (obstacles)

Obstacle #1: What you see inside the red rectangle is a retaining bracket. Once you remove the stock shifter rod from the box, you will notice that the bracket won’t come-off. At this point you have 3 options:
1. Cut the bracket in half and order a new one from Mitsubishi ($20)
2. Cut the rod in half and be able to use the existing retaining bracket. The stock rod can be welded together later, if need be
3. Use a commercial press and press the ball from the shaft

I ended up cutting the rod in half as I didn’t want to wait for the new bracket from Mitsu. I am going to make a suggestion to the guys at Perrin to perhaps include the new bracket as part of the kit in the future.

Obstacle #2: In order to be able to adjust the shifter to shorter throws, you will need to cut (trim) a rectangular piece from the existing box. I marked this on the photo below.

Here is a close up of that area. You need to cut fairly close to the 12mm bolt on the right. If you don’t you will not be able to put 1st and 2nd gears. I have highlighted this area on a close up below.

Here’s a final picture after all has been put back together. I have also changed my shift knob (Momo Cobra). I hope this helps you and saves you some time during your installation.
