Cleaning: exhaust stains...

What's the best way to get rid of exhaust stains? My whole right tail is dirty probably from exhaust, and I can't seem to get it clean... Also how can I get the exhaust tip back to it's shiny new form? It's all smoked out... Thanks for any help.

The owners manual suggests waxing it. Lots of good stuff in there!

wax might prevent build up, but how's it going to help existing stains?

okay, beleive me or not, but, soft scrub works great. it wont hurt the paint in any way. i use it and have used on several of my show cars.

after a good wash, put a about a quarter size glob of soft scrub on a damp cotton cloth and rub gently. i swear it wont hurt your finish. i have many pics of bumpers that a re dirty and clean. won throphies using it, even other car show pros use it(the guys who frequent hot import nights kind of shows).

anyway, hope it helps.

All I used was a can of bug and tar remover. It came right off.

You can probably get it at any grocery store.

i noticed my exhaust tip began to get a yellowish rust color. i went to autozone and got some Mothers Chrome Polish. I did 2 applications, waited 2 hours, and did 2 more. it made it look a lot better. i plan to do it again tomorrow

Just use some wax. No need for simple green or any kind of de-greasers. I get build up all the time and I just wax the rear bumper with a cleaner wax.

Try WD-40, it has done the trick for me on many vehicles. It works good for tar also.

I have a few suggestions...I agree with the soft scrub..i have used this on boats and car when detailing. I would not suggest using simple green on exterior painted surfaces...if simple green dries on the paint it can actually dull it.

Anyways a simple semi abrasive cleaner or swirl remover wax should do it too.

As for the the exhaust pipe...if you are interested in polishing it...first clean it up normally as best as you can. The use Flitz Metal Polish on the exhaust pipe, just use a paper towel or soft rag to rub it in. The rag will quickly turn black ,but you'll have the pipe looking like a mirror in no time. Hope this helps.
