Painted rims

Just painted my rims the other day, but I'm gonna have to replace the old tires, and the bar that my local tire spot uses to remove the tire from the rim might scratch the lip of it, so I figured i could just masking tape off the lip so that it wont get scratched...

Is this a bad idea?

I have 1st hand experience changing tires. To break the bead they will have to stick a tire iron in there. Typically they are nylon or plastic wrapped to prevent damage to the rim. Unfortunately there is no way around this, and there is high probability that the paint will get scratched off your rim.

As the previous person was trying to say, a really good paint job on your rims is "less" likely to scratch off. I would imagine a powdercoated wheel would be more likely to withstand the tire iron.

At any rate, you need new tires, if you painted your wheels, simply let them put your tires on, sand down any scratches you find and repaint them. The nice thing about home paint-jobs, is they can be easily fixed at home. I wouldnt worry about it too much.

just have them take off the tires then powder coat them yourself and have them put the new tires on it will save you from having to repaint you rims evertime you touch them

any shop that is set up for big wheels and takes their time should be able to mount without scratching the paint
