Made my own cold air box

I couldn't find a commercially available cold air box that was exactly what I wanted, so I decided to make one myself. The features I wanted were:

1. It had to significantly keep the hot engine bay air out of the intake.
2. No large holes for harness wires, etc.
3. Clear cover so that the air filter wasn't hidden.
4. The cover had to be water tight, but easily removable.
5. It had to look good ( kind of a subjective thing, but you know what I mean).

This is what I ended up with. You can't really tell from the photos, but the cover fasteners are stainless, quarter-turn Cam-Locks. I'm satisfied with the result, but it may not be to everyone's personal taste. At least, it may lead to some fresh ideas for other Evo owners.

Yes, the front is open. My belief is that mostly cool air from the headlight area will enter there, and very little engine bay air. Also, you can't see from the pics, but there is a 4 inch air intake duct inside the air box which connects to a dedicated collector in the driver's side small bumper opening.

looks great man, did you run air hosing/ducting up from the driver side air passage on the bumper? (area that the IC spray reservoir on the 03-04's is located, or the same location as the IX's ACD Pump is located

I 'm willing to, if there's enough demand, but honestly, this might not be for every one. For example, the Cam-Lock receptacles are flush mounted in the top flanges, and require a 100 degree taper counter sink bit. I used .090 aluminum to provide strength and the necessary seat depth for the Cam-Locks. That, in turn, meant that I had to do the bending on a hydraulic sheet metal brake. ( .090 is very difficult to accurately bend on a hand brake-ask how I know ) Any how, you see what I mean. IMO, this is not a weekend project. Like I said though, I'm willing to help out if anyone really wants to do it.

Very nice job....looks good...I had a similar setup on my GSX with an air duct coming up from the front air dam on the bumper...I have been looking at doing something like this on my car now but the ACD res. makes it interesting...
