The Import Tuner Look Test - I finally failed :)
What cars come with painted intercoolers? I don't think I've ever seen one. I certainly have never seen an aftermarket intercooler painted, the most being "XS" or "GReddy" painted on, but only a logo and not the entire surface and I'm not exactly sure how that is done.
I hope for your sake the effects are negligible, if not then be prepared to face the consequences and not start a "I hate Mitsu" thread if they decide not to honor your powertrain warranty. You have certainly modified your car outside of factory specs.

By stating that "some people" don't know their EVO history, I assume you are referring to me, right?
The EVO's roots trace down to the first Lancer, that was announced on 19 Jan 1973. The lancer was a competitor in the mid-range sedan class. It was a 2 door that came in 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6L engine options. Mitsu debuted a 1974 model in the WRC 22nd Safari Rally. It was a 4-door 1.6L sedan (painted white BTW). They started 46th but worked all the way to victory. It beat the likes of Lanica, Porsche, Ford, Fiat, Datsun and Peugeot. In 1976, Mitsu won the 1976 Safari Rally. In fact, the lancer took the first 3 places. In 1976 the lancer got a facelift. Despite the success, mitsu was not considered a real condender in the WRC in the 70's. 1981 was when the first Turbo engine was introduced for the Lancer. The Acropolis Rally in 1981 was where the 280bhp turbo cars made their debut. Then to Finland for the 1000 Lakes rally. The best finish of that year wa 9th place (the RAC rally). 1982 was not much better, they only got 6th. Mitsu finally got a victory in 1985. The third generation Lancers were introduced in June 1988. This was also when they introduced the 4WD and used it in WRC cars. The Galant VR-4 got mitsu several WRC victories. In 1991 the Galant VR-4 Evolution was born (300hp in a 2L engine). The Galant was found to be too big and heavy and thus the birth of the Lancer Evolution announced in Oct. 1991 (for the 1992 season). This was in fact the fourth generation Lancer with the new 4G93 engine. Mitsu continued to rally in WRC, 5th overall in 1993. You had the EVO II, then EVO III. This was the first year of the recarros and Momo. In 1995, the 5th generation Lancers came to be and so followed the EVO IV, then the EVO V. Evo V introduced us to the Brembos. You had the EVO IV and the Tommi Makinen Edition in 1999. A few more rallys and in 2001 there was the EVO VII and the EVO VIII in 2002. Finally, the recent SEMA show in 2003 introduced the RS EVO that incidently does not have the huge CF wing, like all the other previous EVO's:
I obviously skipped over a lot of details. I'm sure I don't know everything either, but I'm sure I have a pretty good handle on the History of the EVO....
Now can I change my evolved EVO look if I want to?

But the FMIC is still there and it will surely be in its natural aluminum state.
i contacted aps about getting a black IC... they used to provide a wrx ic that was stealth black. I was told by aps that they stopped making black ic's because road debry was chipping the paint and they ended up looking bad... NOT because it caused any overheating problems...purely cosmetic.

The Bauhaus Edict states that Form follows Function, and in this sense, the Evo is beautiful. You'd be hard pressed to find a vent or aero aid that isn't functional on the car, and the intercooler is visible because that's the best place to put one. The car looks like its purpose, which is a Good Thing in design. Putting screen door mesh and painting the intercooler takes away from that function by concealing it with ornamentation. Ornamentation suggests luxury, because it implies a purpose other than going fast and handling well, and in that sense what you've done forces your car to be a little dishonest in terms of what it is. Since this is your goal, you've done a good job achieving it. But don't assume that's what we want.
Your car certainly isn't ugly, but I think that it wouldn't be well received by the intended audience. Basically I think that as far as the general public is concerned, they would like the sleeper evo's looks more. But in terms of people willing to shell out for an Evo, I think that the stock car pushes all the right buttons. Have a little respect for that, since if we all really cared about what Average Joe thought, we'd be driving SUV's.

It doesn't mean that the efficiency is not somehow effected by it being black.
Even if you paint only the very front portions of the ic, the cooling effect is hampered some. It might not be a lotm, but it is still hampered.
There is a reason why you do not paint over the cooling portions of audio amplifiers. There is a reason why you don't paint over the cooling fins on a pc chip. There is a reason why Hot rodders do not usually paint the surface of their radiators. It's because paint hampers the cooling effect.

To be honest with you, while in theory I understand your logic - at least on my application (I have the spearco from the old drag kit on my Integra) it did not make any discernable difference in the 1/4 mile w/ my car. I sprayed the front fins on mine w/ a light coat at an angle so that my car had more of a stock appearance. However I did not dyno w/ and w/out the paint so I can't give you absolute proof.
The stock FMIC on the 1991 and 1992 Galant VR-4 is anadized black. Damn thing is smaller than the side mount IC on the Eclipse...but it is a front mount

Thats all good and fine I can understand the tails, but it sounds to me like your ashamed of the car. It is still a Mits anyway you slice and dice and an Evo for that be proud and don't worry about what others think.
if i were to own an evo, i'd hope i'd get the seven... i'm sorry, i just love it's look...
and if i was to get the new evo, i'd probably be going everywhere to find a kit to make it look like the seven haha... yeah i'm a dork
