Question chipped carbon fiber wing

It looks like a small rock hit the edge of my spoiler(C.F. portion). Does anyone have any suggestions to fix? Do I take it to a body shop or do I have to replace it. It's the long middle shaft, about the size of a quarter, fairly superficial.

If you intend to keep the wing you need to get some clear epoxy and seal the damaged area from the atmosphere ASAP. You may also want to put some clear mylar tape over the damage area. This will prevent moisture from entering the area and causing delamination. Composites can be repaired, but it won’t look as uniform as it did coming from the factory. I can’t imagine your typical body shop would be the place to go for something like that. You would have to find a company that specializes in graphite materials. I would highly recommend someone who has knowledge of aircraft composite repairs. I’m not sure how a proper composite repair would compare price wise with just getting a new airfoil.

Best wishes,

I have a feeling the cost of a new CF wing from the dealer will be sky-high (hopefully insurance will cover it). I would see if anyone is selling theirs in the classifieds and just re-paint it.

sorry to hear that but clear epoxy should help or some product named goop, I do not know if it will be the same though. some professional shops dealing with cf should be able to help without replacing the whole wing

If your talking about the whole wing, I saw a thread on here where some guy could get them brand new from a canadian dealer or something like that for around 500 or a little less i don't quite recall, compared to about 700+ in ur ordinary dealer, u can try to find it in the classified section, just like someone mentioned here or on ebay.

What a rip! My dad has been fixing surfboard dings for 35 yr.'s, so I'm going to hook up with him. He's a pro. Thanks for the info. All he needed to know is if it's fiberglass or epoxy, apparently epoxy.

If your dad has composite experience then you should be ok. In your last post you said you wanted to know if the wing was fiberglass or epoxy. The wings are carbon fiber reinforced plastic, not fiberglass. Fiberglass is a good bit easier to work with than carbon fiber. I’m not sure what kind of resin system is used with this wing.

Good luck and best wishes,
