I understand why there is questions on this. The evo stereo is the base el-cheap stereo mitsubishi offers. You don't have to change the wires for it. What the best buy guy is thinking is if you get the upgraded stereo from mitsu, you will have to change out everything. it is offered with the eclipses, galants and probably the lancers - not the '03 evos. When I had a Eclipse spyder, I had to change out everything. On my evo, just the head unit.

Not the lancers, maybe the ralliarts, cuz they can come with that sun and sound package which has a factory sub, not an installer anymore, so I'm not up to date on new cars, I was just saying it's not necessary on evos, but with full infiniti sound packages, you can't simply just change out the head unit. I was just on the defense because some of these guys were gettin nutz with their comments, I don't defend best buy, but I do with their installers. I can't speak for every store, but the ones I knew were top notch, and helped me learn what I know now. To finally answer that guy's question, just buy your deck, buy the harness, and put the frickin thing in. The whole process won't take more than an hour, and that's if it's an amatuers doin it. As far as the stereo installation goes, it's no different from the oz, and it's as easy as easy can get.

I assure you if you buy the wiring harness, and the head unit, you will be good to go. This is all you need, until you decide you want new speakers...hehe

You will notice (if you have never hooked up a deck before) that there is a black on the rear of the deck for ground, but not on the wiring harness. Mitsubishis get grounded directly to chassis ground, so go ahead and run that black wire on the back of the deck directly to one of the bolts hanging out in the back of that area.

An aftermarket head unit works, no problems, but do yourself a favor and see how much cheaper the unit is off eBay. I just saved myself well over $200 on an Alpine/Infinity system by going eBay instead of Best Buy/Circuit City. Just make sure you buy from someone with lotsa good feedback ...

Peace...

There may be some truth to what the guy at Best Buy told you.

I recently bought an Alpine CDA-9813 head unit. Got the wiring harness, it works with the stock speakers, but where is the god damn bass? With the stock radio, I could hear atleast some bass, but after I changed the deck, my bass is just flat. I tweaked with the Alpine settings a 100 times, and I dont get as much bass as my stock radio used to give me.

So, I guess this explains why the Best Buy guy said, you gotta change the speaer wiring? Will it sound better if I change the factory wiring? I dont know, anyone tried?

Thanks for the feedback!

Similar experience here. I kept the stock head unit, but I replaced the speakers with some nice Audiobahns, and lost the bass. I'm no expert, but I would imagine in my case that a paper cone would vibrate more easily given the power that the factory head unit puts out, as compared to a new poly carbon cone. Not to mention the new speakers have a higher RMS.

It would seem the opposite in your case. Maybe the stock unit is designed to produce bass at lower output, whereas higher quality units are designed to produce the best quality high and low frequencies when the volume is around 80% to make things sound better at high levels.
