Steps:
1) remove wheels from vehicle
2) remove tires from wheels
3) dry sand wheels with 400 grit sandpaper (I used a sanding bar I got at home depot)
4) wet sand with 400 - 600 grit sandpaper (again, I used a snading bar)
5) wash thoroughly with soap and water
6) dry thoroughly
7) spray with the color of your choice (I HIGHLY recommend “Dupli-Color engine enamel (with ceramic) – 500 degree dyno heat tested”. Its available at autozone and checker. It’s incredibly durable.) I did not use a primer… you do not need one. Read below for further directions.
You need to hit the wheels with at least 3 coats (I recommend 4-5 thin coats). If this is your first time using spray paint, I’d recommend 2 cans per wheel. … the paint needs to be recoated every ten minutes in VERY thin coats to come out even and smooth. Once you start you can not stop, meaning all coats need to be applied right after one another (apply a coat, wait 10 minutes, apply a coat, etc). Once the paint sits for an hour or so, the paint will begin to cure. You can NOT spray during the curing process (the paint will run and wrinkle if you do…basically look like ***).
Now for the tricky part…you are going to want coat the entire wheel (front and back). You can do one of two things:
a) use clamps and hang the wheel in your garage from the ceiling. This will allow you to spray the entire wheel at one time. This is the easiest method.
b) You can lay the wheels flat and coat one side at a time. If you use this method: coat the back first, then the front. When you coat the front the back will stick to the ground as it dries. Further, you have to spray be F-ing quick. It’s a *****, hang the wheels if you can.
I do not recommend using a clear coat. I used one on the first wheel and it turned the wheel grey… I had to completely re-prep and spray.
8) re-mount tires on wheels and install on the vehicle.
9) enjoy.
PM me for more detailed instructions.
