Hate your EVO 8 Tails? DON'T trash them there is a solution!
So I decided to do a little experimentation (if you will) with the stock Evolution taillights. Many Evo 8 owners consider them a lost cause. Lets face it they look terrible. So most shell out $350+ for the JDM Evo 7 tails or swap them out for the more desirable black housing Evo 9 tails. You see, my problem with that is I am the cheapest prick you could ever meet so I decided I would utilize what I had.
A little masking: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/121.jpg Here comes the Krylon red stained glass paint. Lay down a couple of coats: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/122.jpg A fresh coat or two of clear: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/125.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/126.jpg And you have yourself some much better looking Evo 7 replica style taillights at a fraction of the cost. 8) The end result: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/127.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/128.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/129.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...20VIII/131.jpg |
I am impressed. Those turned out really nice! Good job.

hmmmmm............

looks nice but nothing earth shattering about what you have done. guys have been modding the stock evo8 tails since the first ugly ass set hit the US..
|
It looks a little better. Evo IX tails look the best with the dark outlining inside. But I have no clue why people on the forums like the nasty Evo VII tail lights.

brokeazzlos did this with his 8... it would fade over the years but just go back and re-paint.. couldnt tell them from the real thing
|
would have looked dope if you smoked out the clear part instead
post some night pics |

I've done a few pairs of taillights in the past when I had my DSM's. Usually to get rid of the amber on the Talon taillights. They always held up perfect. |
Where do you get the Krylon stained glass paint? what other colors do they have? oh and how many coats of the Krylon did you put on?

nice!

Old news. This has been done a ton, basically what evodave does to tails.
And yes it looks roughly 100X better than stock Evo 8 tails. And EVO 7 tails are boss btw. |

But, with that said I have seen only a couple of posts on here where this particular combo was attempted and I don't think the results were the greatest. I never did care for how the clearcoat turned out for the others who attemped this and the overall shade of red that they used. Also from what I have read everyone pulls off the lenses and refinishes them from the inside of the lense. I did the opposite, and to be honest I was a little scared how the turn signal area of the light would turn out but I am really, really surprised how well it all looks in the end. |

is it: http://krylon.com/products/stained_glass_color product red-9020? |
I bought mine from Micheals Craft store but I'm sure you can find it at any local arts and crafts store. I particulary love this stuff because of the shade of red it is. It has a black tint to it almost.

Cute, you have pink taillights now!
 JID, do you remember back in the day when I asked if your's was a VII because of your fruity tail lights and my extreme lack of Evo knowledge, ah those were the days. In all seriousness, it looks good, and I do like that color red and the job you did better than most I've seen, and the red definitely is better than the stock, but the IX blacked out is MUCH better than the red. If I was doing the red I'd save even more time and money by just buying red tint film and doing it the super ghetto way, until I could get the IX ones. |
