Block heat or block noise, 2 different pad shims from Girodisc

Most of you are familiar with our Titanium pad shims that work behind your pads to keep heat from soaking into your calipers at the track. Well, we have a new setup for anti-noise on the street.

Sometimes you try everything known to man to quiet down a set of brake pads but to no avail. Stubborn brake pad noise can require the addition of noise abatement shims to help quiet them down. These shims utilize the exact material used by many OEM's to absorb vibration and dampen noise. All shims have a rubber impregnated face and a peel-off self adhesive film on back to help hold the shim in place during installation.

These can be a great help in providing noise free braking. NOT intended to quiet down race pads driven on the street! $15 fronts or rears.

When installing, I'll give you guys a tip most don't know. Everybody puts goo on the backing plates but rarely do people put it on the leading and trailing edge of the backing plate. This area comes into contact with the pad abuttment plates in the caliper and can be a source of noise during light pedal, slow speed stopping. When dealing with a set of pads that just won't shut up, pull them out, clean everything, bevel the leading edge of each pad slightly with a grinder, put these anti-noise shims in, apply your favorite brand of goo to the back and sparingly to the edges of the backing plates, reassemble and make sure the pads are bedded properly. Done deal!

Just a repeat quick lesson for those of you who don't know about or maybe fully understand our Titanium shields, taken from our website:

The problem of brake fluid boiling is simply traced to heat transferring from the rotors and pads directly into the fluid through the caliper pistons. When brake fluid boils, it releases air that is normally part of the molecular structure of the fluid. This air is compressible of course, and the brake pedal goes to the floor instead of moving the caliper pistons. Production cars tend to suffer from this on track days more as they don't usually have the extensive cooling duct and exotic brake materials as true racing cars. True racing only brake calipers generally come with titanium caliper pistons for one reason. Titanium as a material, has low thermal conductivity. This means that it is very bad at transferring heat. Which is good if you are trying to keep your fluid cool.

The Girodisc solution to help prevent fluid boiling is to use a thin titanium shim placed between the pad back and the pistons, to keep the braking heat from transferring into the pistons and fluid. Here is a comparison of materials and their relative thermal conductivity ratings
Titanium 6AL-4V 6.7 W/mk Steel 52 W/mk Aluminum 130 W/mk

You can see that Titanium will transfer far less heat than steel and especially aluminum. For cars that are going to see hard or multiple track days, these shims are cheap protection from loosing the pedal due to boiling at the wrong time and making the day very expensive.

Water jet cut to exact size, no cutting, grinding, or swearing involved. $80 front or rears.

Another added benefit, they save your dust boots too!

Just wanted to let everyone know.

Thanks,

Martin
