Wide tires vs not so wide tires?

heres the question guys. can having too wide a tire work against you in any situation(are there any negative points). for every day street driving . for example 245/40 18 vs 255/35 18?
also, is it better to have different size wheel-tire in the front , wider in the rear?

thanks for any help

1. More rotational mass = slower car.

2. Different profile = different gearing.

3. Do not stagger. Your transfer case will not be happy.

thanks everyone ,
i guess my biggest concern about the wider tires is, that i dont want to car to pull on uneven pavement, or in general screw up the cars ride. street driving is a priority

You won't notice a difference between 245's and 255's though.

I have 3 sets of wheels and tires for my car. 17x8.5s with 235s. 17x9.5s with 255s. 18x9.5s with 285s. Ultimate track grip is the best with the wider set-ups, but the 235s feel the best by far on the street due to the lighter weight.

I say stretch 235 on the widest rim possible. I mean all the V-Dubs guys are doing, it has to be legit right?
