Hi Sam

The 40 series works, but the possibility of moving the bumper bolt will likely be needed. It would be my choice as the sidewall looks great & offers excellent street performance /protection. The 255/40 does give you some breathing room in regards to rear fender work. Hopefully a good, flat roll & around -2.0 degrees of camber may do it!

For reference, The 35 series tire is actually just about spot-on w/the OEM circumference. Speedo error is only .09%

ok. i'm seeing 235/45-17 (oem, obv) at 25.327

255/40-17 (prev set) 25.032, so a little undersized
255/40-18 - 26.032, about 0.7" oversized
255/35-18 - 25.028, so pretty close to the 255/40-17
265/35-18 - 25.303, so almost spot on to the oem size.

if i go 265s i'll go 265/35-18, but leaning towards 255s to qualify for some of the gridlife/hpde series. i'd prefer 40 in the case i run 255s too, just to stretch out 3rd gear even a little longer to stay off 4th

Very good Sam. I like your idea of running the 255/40/18's. They will look nice and fat on the wheel

255 on a stock X wheel? You're not worried about a squishy side wall? I ran a 255 on a 9.5 wheel. There was a tiny stretch (with all but the NT-01) so considered going down to a 9" wheel. I couldn't imagine running anything narrower.
Is this for AutoX or road course?

is there something in particular to worry about?

didn't think it'd be too bad, since oem is 245. i also ran 255s on a 9.5, and it was probably about perfect. i like the X wheels, so I was hoping to run on them. 255 seems to be the max for a few of the series, otherwise I can just run 245/40-18s on the X wheels. orrr get some 18x9's, but i just bought some 18x9.5s for autocross...

Sam

I used to run the X wheel w/a 255/35 tire. The max width for the 8.5" wheel is a 255 (although you can get away w/running a 265 if needed)

The 40 series tire would be great for the street

Eh, it depends on what you are doing with it. If it's your street setup, like MinusPrevious says, then it won't matter either way. Most people run 255s on the their stock wheel to get a "meaty" look.
I AutoXed an VIII that had 255s on stock wheels and it drove me nuts (I don't run AutoX fitments, so it was weird to me). If the X wheel is wider than the VIII (I assume it is, if the stock tire is a 245 vs the VIII's 235), then that would definitely help.

275 is one size too large for the 9". 265 is the max width noted on the charts.

However, it is dependent on the tire brand. I ran a 275/40 Nitto NT05 on a Advan 17x9 wheel and it looked & worked OK. No real side wall buldge.

If you want I can post a pic of it?
