I can't find info on this subject. I'd like to run stock wheels on the car while daily driving/trailering but will have extended studs. So, I'm trying to find open-ended lug nuts, with shank.. but I need to order by shank diameter.

Any advice? Anyone had to do the same?

I have a feeling it's super simple and I'm just missing it LOL.

Orrrr you could do what I did and cut off the caps of the stock lugs. Quick zip with a cutoff wheel is all it takes and no those caps dont add any structure to the actual nut so no issues there.

Sean told me about those, but I was having trouble finding 'em. thanks!

I thought about cutting them.. but with my luck, I'd miss a burr... mess up a stud.. or would get too hot when I cut them blah blah.
I can be clumsy. Rather buy some done LOL.

Lol its so easy. And that cap is literally a super thin piece of metal. Took me maybe at most 10 minutes to do all 20 of them.

Obviously do what you're comfortable with. My thought was with extended studs all around the stock nuts are no longer useful to me so figured Id give it a shot. After seeing just how effortlessly it was to zip off the cap I was glad I did.

I just checked w/one of our mechanical engineers & he really didnt have a problem w/removing the cap as Eric noted

I thought it would create a stress riser & potentially cause it to fail. In any event, I agree w/Jason, & just buy a proper, non tinkered with fastener, as it is securing the wheel assy

Oh I completely agree it sounds sketchy and I too thought the same thing initially. But as noted I figured WTH they're no use to me anymore with longer studs so what do I have to lose. But after zipping off the first cap, thats when I realized it offers no additional structure to it. The actual cap portion is paper thin. No exaggeration a cutoff wheel sliced through each one in less than 10 seconds; it took me more time to place them into my vice to secure it.

They cut so fast that its not adding additional heat like you'd think it would. Of course if you're not competent with a cutoff wheel and slip you could weaken the lug.

But you are correct it is a fairly critical application so if you're not comfortable with it then don't do it. Im not trying to condone any unsafe practices and certainly would hate to hear a horror story that resulted in injuring someone.

But hey this is an open forum so I'm simply sharing my experience. You're welcome to do as you please just offering my .02 and trying to illustrate that its not as sketchy as it sounds on paper.

I remember, years ago (but don't remember why...) I tightened a lug nut on with a torque stick. The stud was so long, it popped the end of the nut up.
They are SERIOUSLY thin, right there.
But, someone may want my OEM lug nuts (maybe me, one day..?), so I'll save them and get the Toyota parts. According to Google, the Toyota nuts (LOL) have a shank that is .02" smaller O.D., but I don't see that being much of a problem.

I might have my bag of Toyota open lugs somewhere in my garage from my CT9A. I have no use for them anymore. If I can find them you can have them if you pay shipping.
