Question Please HELP!... :-(

Hi,
I need suspension advice. I have a 1999 Evo6 RS, which I race on a tarmac road course. I have installed a LEDA coil-over suspension and am seriously disapointed with its performance. I am considering taking a trip to the United Kingdom (I might get free air fare) in person to purchase a better suspension system. Here in PR I have the only evo so there is nobody to help me with my problem, and nowhere to purchase parts. My car understeers SEVERELY. I have tried running excessive front camber, diferent toe angles, but have found no definite solution. Since I have decided to replace the LEDA suspension, I need sugestions on what brand to consider, and if you know, the price in US dollars. Also the only place I would know to visit in the UK for parts is RalliArtUK, but I know they don't carry many brands of suspension. So any other places I could visit would also help me.... Anyway, thank you very much for your help.

Sincerely,
Julian Gutierrez

There was another thread where someone brought up DMS shocks ( http://www.dmshocks.com ). They seem to be very good quality and offer excellent service. They would most likely have experience with the Evo, although they may not have circuit experience.

What spring rates were you running? In the US, we tend to run higher rates in the rear and this helps the car to rotate. Maybe you can try something like that before you get rid the Leda suspension.

For Racing I suggest Proflex 3-way adjustable suspension for a medium sort of price (about 3000 pounds) and if you have lots of money go for Öhlins they have a range of suspensions for the Evo from 5000 pounds to 20000+ pounds. Why would you want to travel to the UK to buy parts like that?? Ralliart UK are definetely NOT the place to go for serious tuning. Contact for example ohlins directly at www.ohlins.com and for Proflex I suggest www.proflex.be, which is a distributor site and they are very helpful. Other than that try camber settings like 2,5 front and 1,75 in the rear and see how it feels. As far as toe goes there's a range of possibilities depending on your driving style.

In the UK, Tony Rodriguez has a 6 RS built for track work. Look at his site http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tony.rodriguez/.

Tony is using Drummonds and everybody who has been in the car has been really impressed. There are various threads about this on the MRL forum.

That's a road kit though with dust seals, if you want hardcore racing suspensions those DMSs are not the ones you want. I believe that DMS also do a racing suspension that Claudius had before, or am I wrong. I believe you want a racing setup in that case your ranking should be:

1. Öhlins
2. Proflex
3. DMS

There are also some very specialised manufacturers that have stuff in the Öhlins league but I don't remember any at the moment (I think someone like Kieper, Kiefer, ah fuhgedit!!)

Sorry, in that case forget DMS unless they have dampers with a seperate gas reservoir.

Now I remember why I don't post here.

I did word my post carefully. Maybe I should have said that they had been impressed byt the ssuspension and handling. A number of people have been out in Blades car to judge the suspension. These people are used to high performance Evos and they judged the Drummonds against other available suspension options.

I agree with Michael that Drummonds are a compromise, but that the compromise is between the need to strip down and rebuild the units and performance. If the car is only used in competition and is being rebuilt regularly, then fine. But many people do not want to regularly strip their suspension.

In fact, you will remember a long thread on this subject on another forum where the pros and cons of the different units were discussed. SuperLancer was one who was certainly impressed with the suspension because not only did it perform, but also because it requires far less maintainance. Superlancer stated "the suspension was very impressive. It was compliant, allowed you to really ride the rumble strips without unbalancing the car and minimized roll. Understeer has been greatly reduced and unlike the standard Evo 6 could be "driven around".

Julian

I hope this is of use to you. Do you drive only on the track or is yours a road car as well. What are you looking for, other than the obvious of reduced/no understeer.

Hey, hey take it easy, although Simon is a ******
The maintenance for a racing suspension for road use could be too much for some people, but then some people also like seat warming and nice leather interior. But I think that we are talking about racing use here, in which case that doesn't matter.
Then again we don't know cause Julian hasn't replied to our posts yet, which could partly be because he's sleeping at the moment and dreaming of Evos and/or nice chicano chickas

As usual, I was just over sensitive to being slammed down in the way I was and there should have been a wink on the end of the statement anyway!

I personally am still running Eibach springs and standard struts with grp n bushes all round. I have added a rear strut brace recently. I have also just ordered the sports ECU following a chat with SuperLancer.

What I suspect is that Julian could get really good improvements in handling with other mods as well. For instance, the Cusco diffs seems to be very impressive. Have you seen the videos on the RC Development web site [url]www.rcdevelopments.com. Well worth the wait to download. I don't have enough knowledge at the moment to be sure of which way to go, but this is the next area I want to look at in detail.
