Thumbs down Pirelli P-Zero Nero

I wanted to try the Good Year F1's but they were back ordered until who knows when. So I bought the Nero's and here is what I found.

If you want a comfortable ride then this is your tire, but it comes at a heavy price. They have far less overall grip than the A046's and even worse, the ultra sharp steering response is gone . At stock pressures (32/29PSI) these tires squirm so much they are down right scary at high-speed maneuvers (even on the street).

I found that increasing the tire pressures helps, currently I am running 42/38PSI F/R. I have been to the track with these tires (http://www.motorsportranch.com/) twice already and I did have fun, (more than I expected). With the ultra soft side walls and the dynamics of the EVO it is much easier to get the rear end to come around. After two days of track testing and playing with tire pressures I was still over 2 second off my average times with the stock tires, and the outside edge chunked and wore far worse than the Ao46's.
What really brought it home for me was on the second track day I drove another EVO on the course with the stock tires. After seeing the lap time differences and experiencing the tires back to back, I finally realized how awful the performance of these tires really were (at least on the EVO). The suspension was probably designed with an ultra stiff sidewall tire as part to the equation. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still better than most cars, just not where it should be for an EVO.
After looking around, the only tire that will probable compare well with the stock tire is the BFG KD's, but they don't come in our exact size and they cost about the same, so you mine as well stick with the A046's (unless your going bigger).
I bought this car mainly because of the great handling and the practicality of the four doors and large trunk. I am willing to give up ride comfort for the sake of handling, if this were not the case I would have bought something else (like G35, 330i,etc).

I was also at the track just the day before, trying to finish off the A046's before the Nero's were installed, so there was no issue's with suspension alignment, etc. Since I bought them, I really wanted to like these tires, unfortunately I cannot recommend them for this car. They are great if you just want to putz around town, but who wants to just do that in an EVO? There are far better cars for that task.

As others have mentioned, with the A046's increasing the rear tire pressure (about 5PSI) above the front's seems to help with under steer. It is just the opposite affect of what you see with soft sidewall tires like the Nero. Apparently the tire pressure adjustment general rules are opposite with these tires. With the A046's I found 33/38PSI F/R works best for me on a road course.

It's tough to beat the A046 for outright performance without resorting to an R-compound tire. I also have NERO's on my car for daily use, and I put the A046 on a 2nd set of wheels for track days.

I hear you, but I get on a track just about every other week. I would much rather buy new tires every 6 months then go through the hassle of lugging a second set of tires around. If I get a second set they will have Hoosiers on them and only be for competitive events, if allowed.
I am a member here http://www.motorsportranch.com/ so I can drop in for a session at a momments notice. I do this for fun, changing out tires and brake pads every other week is not my idea of fun.

The p zero neros are not good at all.
They just replace the old pirelli p 6000, they re not a sports tyre, if you want a sports tyre you have to get the p zero yellow assimmetrico. The pzero rosso is the one for big cars like audis or some not too fast porsches, and then you have the road legal slick, the p zero corsa.

I don't know what tyres you are used to in US, but the evo is a special car and it needs better tyres than other cars.

The advan 046r should be BTW better than a lot of sports tyres, but not as good as a road legal slick.

BTW dont get michelin pilot sports...

If you just want an everyday tyre, get the p zero yellow.

There are two versions of the Nero. One is Pirelli's ultimate performance tire, the other is an all season replacement for the P6000. We're talking about the Max performance version.

Well its a given that the Yoko Advan will provide better traction, cornering, and handling in general when compared to the PZero Nero. The Advan uses a much softer rubber compound (160 treadwear) which provides for much better handling and steering response when compared to the harder compound of the PZero Nero (220 treadwear). Its almost like comparing the Advans to the R compound Toyo Proxes RA-1's (40 treadwear = roughly 1500 miles of good use before they're shot.)

Its a compromise of how long you want the tire to last. The softer the compound = the better the traction = the shorter the tire life.

The harder the compound = the worse the traction = the longer the life.

Yes, but some tires perform and wear far better or worse than the spec sheet would indicate. My Advan's had about 12-15 (20 min) hard driving track sessions and 12K mixed street miles on them. Near the end of there life I tried to finish them off at the track, but I could have easily gone another 2-3K on the street with them. Considering the handling, I think the wear performance is outstanding.
After 3 track sessions the Nero's showed considerably more wear and horrible chunking, but the handling sucks too! The Nero's have a soft ride and cheap price. IMO no max performance tire should have such a soft side wall, the EVO deserves better.
I already ditched the Nero's and got another set of A046's.

Sounds like you need a daily driver.
I have done that before, but then you spend the majority of your time in a car that you do not really enjoy. If I wanted a toy I would just buy an all out race car, why screw around? I bought the EVO because it's a lot of fun yet IMO it has enough practicality to be a daily driver. IMO so far it seems that the stock components have the best comprimise for daily driven street/track use.
For me most production cars give up to much performance in the name of economy, comfort, and utility, for me the EVO seems to have just the right balance.
