Back from the dead, one thing I noticed is there are 2 physical differences between the 2 wheels, the step in the barrel of the rim is by the spokes on one and by the inside face on the other. I don't think it makes difference though.

Do you have any pics to show the difference? I'm curious now!

Just to be clear, ALL of these wheels came from Japan, so one must be from an Evo IX MR and the other from a VIII MR.

I guess the SE has VIII MR wheels as it wouldn't make logical sense for the JDM IX MR wheels to weigh more than the VIII MR wheels.

^Thank you for the pics, Banzai. That is all very surprising to see! I'm not sure how the one would weigh more than the other, as the amount of metal used should be the same for both. The one with the stepped lip may hold more air with the tire in place, increasing weight slightly that way I suppose.

Do you have 4 wheels in each style, or only one with the step on the outside? If you only have 1 of them, that would make me wonder if that barrel was replaced at some point.

No worries, I only noticed when I was preparing them for ceramic coating and something felt off, then I stopped to look and noticed.
I can't comment on the weight difference because I haven't weighted them but with a different design the metal may be thicker on one than the other, depends how the loads interact with the step in different positions.
I have 3 of the step on the inside and one of the step deep in the barrel. My car was imported from Japan with 4 MR wheels in the back of the car and 4 aftermarket RAYS on the car, when it arrived to New Zealand we discovered someone had stolen 2 of the wheels out of the back of the car!!! As a result I had to buy 2 more wheels to complete the set. the different one was one of those two additional wheels I bought to complete the set.

I'll try weigh them at some point but it won't be soon.
