255 will fit on 8 inch through 9.5 inch wheels just fine. You have alittle more room to play with as far as offset with a smaller wheel, so with 8.5 inch width, you can certainly run +20s with little clearance issue. With a wider wheel, you have to consider inboard and outboard clearance. I've typically advised friends to stay in the higher +20s to mid 30s offset. You'll also have to consider spacers in the front wheels for higher offsets also. Some of my experience for consideration:
17x9.5 +24 Advan TC-II - Front fritment is perfect, with tons of caliper clearance. Rear needed to be rolled.
17/18 x 9.5 +38 RPF1 - On 255 tires, Front requires 20mm spacers, and -2 degrees of camber. Rear is perfect. On 285, rear requires rolling, and 5mm spacer for inboard clearance, or it will run the lower control arm.
18x8.5 +38 - OEM Evo X size, perfect in every way on 255.
17x9 +27 Team Dynamics - Roll rears
