Broken strut coilover

I know this happens more often then anyone would to admit, but for any of you who have had their strut crack like this, is it worth while or even safe to weld it back together? I'm waiting for the manufacturer to reply to my email because I'd rather replace it. Curious as to how much that usually cost as well if any of you know or have experience with this.

So how did that happen? Is that rust around the area of where its welded or just dirt and grime? Did you hit a pot hole or just go out to your car one day and stumble upon a cambered out right wheel?
