Just been reading that the tread on unidirectional tyres is only there to get water away so therefore can you swap rims for a track day and still run the tyre the wrong way without any impact to handling on a dry track?

I've been told the same. I've had to run a couple tires the wrong way, once, and noticed no difference in performance (dry).

Yeah, pretty common internet topic. Seems like the consensus is:

If they are treaded, dont drive them in the rain
Marginal tire noise increases
Not that big of a deal. Will work OK in the dry w/no real loss of performance

No problems in the dry... ...never tried it in the rain

No issues in the dry, zero effect on Performance.

In the wet though, it can cause a big issue since the tread pattern will be trying to shove water into the middle of the tire, instead of out the sides of the tire...
