As the title states...

if given the choice which size would you run...

215 - 55- 17 or 245 45 17

If you can get the 215 to fit, run it. Think pizza cutter verses rolling pin, which would provide more "contact" with the ground under snowy conditions, (snow tyres don't need width/surface area).

my concern is the fitting ( i really want the 215) ... im worried the 55 side wall be too tall and will rub..

Unfortunately these are the only two sizes i can afford

215's are a tad too narrow for the oe 8" wheel. Why not run the oe 235's?

I think he meant vice verse, rim is too wide for the tire.

I burned off some 225/45/17 DSM tires on my stock wheels. They fit perfect ... no issues other than being a tad shorter than normal. You probably want more clearance in the snow. I would go with stock or narrower and taller.
