What's happening here.. CV boot damage?
I found this mess under the car the other day. noticed it while changing tranny and diff fluids. This is the front driver side pictured..the pass side isn't quite as bad. I'm not quite sure what is going on here or what has caused this. the grease seems to be spraying circumferentially from the boot and the green joint..no rips or tears observed on the rubber boot. Car is an 04 w/ 40k, only suspension mod is tanabe springs..thanks everyone

You need to get new CV boot kits from Mitsu. That grease is the same color as the OEM stuff from Mitsu. Yours must be cracked or split open and letting it fly once rotating at higher rpms (probably highway speeds).

thanks...is that normal wear on a 5yr old/40k car or due to abuse? I dont drive that hard, but i am on the highway frequently.

Well, up here in the northeast we get our share of freezing to hot weather with salt in the winter. It abuses the rubber boots and bushing under our cars.
After the fix, it would be a good idea to spray all the rubber components every oil change with silicone or mild lube oil. My 03 Evo which is always outside is fine due to my spraying them. |
your CV boot is ripped and, as the axle spins, cyntrifical force (sp) is throwing the grease out.

thanks again guys...so i was just looking up parts and want to clarify, its the CV boots and not the actual cv joint? boots are cheap, the joint itself is quite the opposite. ill inspect the units more closely for defects to make sure it just the rubber boots lacking integrity

learn something new everyday thanks .

You just need a new boot since yours isn't that bad yet. Be sure to pack plenty of new grease inside the new boot.

Spraying the rubber boots with silicone is a very good suggestion. Its done often on my 2003 Evo, and my 1996 civic with 170k miles. They are both on the original rubber cv boots.

Seems strange that boots on both axles would be leaking. You might want to check to see if your mechanic has an ice pick in his tool chest. :(
