2015 GSR - mild mods, 3.5" exh, 93 octane

Posting up my first tune of an Evo X for comment/feedback. I've done a few CT's and CP's before, but this is my first go at tuning the X and I'm not sure if there's more in it or not.

Car is basically stock except for these mods:
Grimspeed 3 port
Custom 3.5" de-cat back exhaust with Varex muffler (stock dump + front pipe)
K&N drop in panel filter
ETS 2.5" upper/lower IC piping
Turbosmart BOV
Tephra XMOD v3

This is tuned on Australian 98 octane (similar to US 93) at an altitude of 1900ft. The car is knocking pretty inconsistently and have been having trouble getting it to settle to get the power out of the top end. Maybe too much boost for the mods/altitude?

Timing starts at 1* at peak boost, then ramps up to 5* at peak tq, then up to 16* at redline where boost (and tq) is dropping off pretty badly as you can see. I've got WGDC pegged at 100% from 6250rpm.

MIVEC is all new to me, so this is running one of the GST intake/exhaust maps that were shared around. Maybe I need to play with that a little more to get a few more hp up top and hold some torque.

How much knock are you seeing? Does it correspond with the rise and fall of the boost curve? I don't have any experience 4B11 timing maps, but that seems aggressive.

That 3.5" exhaust isn't helping either. That is way too big for such a mild set up.

Agreed that it's unnecessary for this application, but unless the larger diameter tubing is rattling against something and the ecu is picking the sound up as false knock, it's not relevant to the issue described.

Yeah 16* degrees timing up top on pump gas equivalent to 93 seems a little high.

I hate to quote a guy from my job... but... "your wrong, your wrong, you couldn't be more wrong".... If you could have the PERFECT exhaust it would look like a large orange hazard cone with it cut to match the turbine outlet and be about a foot long getting larger the length. 3.5" exhaust doesn't HURT anything, and any reduction in backpressure HELPS. The larger the better with turbos. Does he NEED that large for these power/flow levels - probably not.

A great book to pickup is:

1* at peak boost is a bit low. 16* up top isn't too bad for 93 octane and that boost curve. I'd say the afr is a tad lean around 6300rpm.

All your mivec gains will be spool and lower mid range. If you try to pick up power out the top you will be chasing your tail.

Thanks for feedback guys. The 3.5" exhaust is a bit of overkill at this point, but the owner did it to save replacing again later. He has plans for an FP Red or Black at some stage

To give you a bit more of an idea of the inconsistency, I've added the other run to VD which was knocking almost the whole pull. From just under 3K, right through to redline. Knock count was between 1-5 across the whole pull. The 2nd run I showed in my 1st post (done <2 mins later), was still knocking a bit from about 3K to 5.5K with counts of 2-4's, but was clean up top.

I've dropped the whole timing map above 120 load by 1*, boost down to ~24psi and added more fuel from 6K to see if it changes anything. The owner is away, so won't have logs for another couple of days I'd say (e-tune).

But based on your comment Bryan, it's already a bit low at peak boost, which is just after the point knock seems to start and then I can't shake it for most of the run. Maybe I need to add timing around peak boost?

Bump, with 2 more logs. Still a bit inconsistent unfortunately.

Am trying to delay the peak boost a bit to see if that helps and also gives us a bit more up top.
