Dyno'd AP Comparo - Stock, CBE, Perrin Map, Cobb Map
Short story: almost 70 WHP gain over stock on a DynoDynamics with just a CBE and AP reflash…I can’t complain! :D
Long story: I took my GSR over to Ptuning Saturday for some pulls and to get my CBE installed. All pulls were in 3rd gear on a Dyno Dynamics dyno with 93 octane from the pump. Each run (#'s 1-4) consisted of 3 pulls, the results represent the average, i.e. throwing out high/low.
http://img2.aznphotos.com/img2/dynopower090314mril.jpg As you can see, the Perrin map showed a more aggressive AFR after 4700, and but, despite this, had 19 less peak horsepower than the Cobb map…most likely because the Cobb map held slightly more boost from 5300 to redline. The Cobb gave me a more aggressive AFR in the low rpms, and low-end torque results reflect this. While peak torque was practically identical, you can see the Perrin gave me a narrower torque curve. http://img1.aznphotos.com/img1/dynoa...090314ld3f.jpg BTW, This 93 map from Cobb is new--it came out 5 March--so it may have been an “answer” to the Perrin tune that has been out for a while.;) Toan from Ptuning did the pulls; what a great guy! {thumbup} Since this was the first X they had handled, he was extra meticulous and gave me a lot more time than I paid for so he would have some good baseline data for tuning Xs in the future. :mitsu: |
Those are some serious gains. Very nice results.

I wasn't aware of a new Cobb AP stage one map.....hmmm I guess I need to look into this as I am currently running the Perrin Stage one map. Also, it might have been worth trying to run the Cobb Stage 2 map with the CBE installed. I know they call for a TBE, but it has been proven that the stock downpipe and cat have a good flow in the stock form. It would have been interesting to see what the Stage 2 map would have done for you. Truthfully I think you will see better gains from the Stage two map, and you maybe missing out a little power running that Stage one map. Only my opinion though...... |

I don't think I'd risk running the Stage 2 without a full turboback...also because you are supposed to remove the top wastegate solenoid restrictor pill to run it. I figure whenever you run a tune, the tuner is reducing the factory safety margin by a certain amount in order to increase performance. However, a reputable tuner carefully balances risk versus reward. If Cobb thought it were universally safe to run their stage 2 with a catback, they would advertise it as such. If anything, I would consider a custom AP tune first |
Cobb posts some pretty impressive numbers for their maps and frankly, I've always been a little skeptical... how can one so easily get such a huge gain for simple mods? I read lots of stories about people loving their AP's. I can see why.

This will be my first mod. The ability to go back to stock is great. Do you have a boost gauge im curious as to what they boost on this map.
Also does the AP have the ability to run its own custom tune? Like can you tune your car yourself for your mods and afr to your liking? |

You can't tune it yourself, but there are official AP tuners in most areas...Cobb has a search feature on their website. Unfortunately, many of these "pro tuners" are Subie specialists and are not tuning the X yet. |
Excellent gains! and great comparo :)

I think i'm buying that AP
|
Does the CBE make that much of a difference between the Cobb and Perrin maps? I have the AP with no CBE and the Perrin stage 1 "feels" like it pulls much harder than the new Cobb stage 1. Just my 2 pennies!

Nice gains from the AP. More and more it looks like the way to go.

Seriously, though...just 'cause the Cobb map worked better for me doesn't mean it's the be-all end-all. I was just trying to add some empirical data to balance out all the subjective evaluations I'm waiting on the AP update to come out, then I will try the Stage 2 93 map and post the dyno results from that too {thumbup} |
