Cobb Access port question
Cobb Access port question
So I'm on the market for one of this gizmos and my question is can you actually tune your evo and create maps or do you have to buy or get maps online. It is my understanding that the Accessport is basically a scan tool that also reflashes, but you can't tune the ecu your self. Thanks in advance
So your basically paying 600 bucks for an electronic handbag ? That's not to clever and don't give me the i can log and watch 1/4 mile times stuff because ecuflash can do just the same for free, dunno
Evosorio, With the AP you pay for two things over ecuflash. You pay for the customer service from Cobb should you have any problems, and you pay for the ability to have the maps saved on a small handheld vs saved on your laptop. Thats about the only advantages. I see vendors offering to "Sell" maps for AP holders for a hundred bucks...thats hard to swallow for me when i can just simply ask someone with mods similar to mine for their opensource map (given they have proof of the maps safety via dyno and logging).
A thing to consider is that the AP is taking something like 15! minutes to download peoples stock maps. Ecuflash does it in about 20 seconds or less. And i can upload just as fast using ecuflash..im not sure on the upload speed of the AP, but if the download is any indication...
Of course ecuflash isnt technically out yet...but you dont have to be albert einstein to figure out how to get it.

^For some people it works nice. I personally do not want to lug around my lap top or pay over 1K for a super compact lap top, so the AP and its capabilities are perfect. Its small sits in your glove box, can data log, and do whatt you said above. I think ecuflash is great to, but you need a laptop andthe cable, so its not like its free either.

Dont buy a 1k laptop then. You could get a VERY small $400 7" to 10" eeePC and install ecuflash on it. Buy the $160 cable, and you have a cheaper solution (560) then the AP (695).

^Its really just a preference. Both are great solutions. I personally like the AP. As always we could go on and agrue forever which is better like always happens on forums. I personaly like AP type devices, but others may like Ecuflash. Both are great. One is officially out. Cobb is 2hrs from my house so Im going with them. Im not a profession tuner. I want a car customed tuned to my mods, so cobb works. 625 is not much when u consider what you pay for the car, and it is still less than a FMIC, Exhaust, Wheels, and many other mods that we all do.
I no nothing about tuning and did not want to risk ruining a $35K amazing car. I have the Access Port and there is a huge difference in power especially over 5K, very smooth power too. The monitoring is an amazing feature as well as reading codes and deleting them. Cobb's customer service was outstanding. I had an issue with the Dongler (part that connects to OBD-II port) not reading the car. Called them picked up the phone within 3 rings sent me a program (while on the phone) to update the dongler. Took less than 10 minutes.
I put it like this if you know what you're doing and experienced in tuning Ecuflash might be better for you. We all know in the world of modifications that nothing really ever works out the first time around. If not experienced with tuning AP is probably the better route for you.
This by far the best product I have ever used as far as tuning/monitoring, it is just so convenient. Also if you sell the car you can still sell the AP for about $300-$400. So in theory you only paid $200. You can get AP for $600. And if you apply the time value of money concept the resale money will be worth more b/c it is in present time.

Out of all the posts nobody has answered a simple question, CAN YOU TUNE ? Because if your buying maps and uploading them that is NOT tuning, so it's not a tuning device, it's a clever little machine that does lots of things but it doesn't allow you to tune your evo, that is my question, can't a fellow get a simple answer nowadays
