Cam phase TSB?

I posted something on "the other Evo forum" over the weekend about how my SES light came on while I was driving around Friday night and brought it in to the dealer for diagnosis this morning. Figured I'd post my experience here too.

I had a friend scan it on Saturday and it came up as a P0017/Crank Position Sensor, but the dealer actually diagnosed it as the Cam Phase and said the there was a service bulletin for it.

They basically pulled the sensors, looked for any possible debris (which there was none), remounted them, and reset the ECU. I've driven about 30 miles since and everything is good so far - still no light - but he said if it comes back they will have to replace the sensors and possibly even the timing chain!! Jeez...

The car is 100% stock - never redlined or launched - and has less than 2400 miles on it.

Not sure if this is specific to the 2011, but just wanted to throw out a heads-up in case anyone else experienced this.

So, I've thrown another P0017 code last night. This time though, I was accelerating from a light and it almost felt like the clutch slipped causing a near redline RPM spike. I shifted through 2nd and 3rd fine, pulled over, shut it down, grabbed a sandwich, started it back up, and the Service Engine Soon light came back on...

Got an appointment with the dealer tomorrow morning to confirm - just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this or if I'm the "lucky" one...

Still stock, still never launched, only about 3200 on the ODO

mine ended up being the oil control solenoid valve.

exhaust and intake cam position sensors got replaced first......

......but still got the p0017 a short time later

I've heard that it could also be the oil control solenoid...

Just out of curiosity, what year is yours? And about how many miles did you have when you got it? Have you had any issues since it was replaced?

mine is '10 gsr. got the cel at about 5000.

at about 11k now. everything is fine.

Hmm.. I've never heard of it. Sorry this crap happened to you..

P0017: Crankshaft/camshaft (exhaust) Position Sensor Phase Problem
The close timing of the exhaust valve is faster or slower than the specified value.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are:)
•Timing chain in out of place.
•Loose timing chain.
•Exhaust variable valve timing sprocket tooth coming off.
•ECM failed.

Just got back from the dealer - they are going to change my Oil Control Valve Solenoids. They did an oil change too and said my oil was unusually dark for only having 3200 miles on it, so hopefully that will fix it.

@ 07outty - thanks for the info. Hopefully that will do the trick for me too.

@ tephra - man, I hope it's not timing chain related. But they said that's the next step if swapping out the solenoids doesn't fix it. Thanks for the detail - the scanner my bud has only listed it as "crank position sensor"

@ ugakirk - thanks for your condolences =)

Just got the car back today after they replaced both the intake and exhaust oil control solenoid valves. So far so good - hopefully it stays that way...
