EVO X break in period?
What we understand as the 'break in' or sealing of the piston rings etc. that the engine undergoes is done within a couple hundred miles on normal engines. The few exceptions are like the s2000 with it's FRM cylinder walls that require longer break in. As much as we'd like to think otherwise, unless you got your car with 0 miles, someone else probably already did you the favor.
Racing engines are broken in on dyno, and raced before they have 200 miles on them.
That being said, the differentials, transmission, etc. do often require a longer break-in process. So I'd definitely take it easy on the transmission [includes clutch] and the connecting drivetrain components. The I'd wait until at least 5k to replace the transmission and differential case fluids unless you plan on racing it in which synthetic products are probably better for long term durability.
So if you take a few trips to redline don't worry about it too much, but avoid launching the car or extremely aggressive shifting. I'd suggest checking out evo break in which will link you to various auto forum threads about break in procedures.

Follow the instructions from Mitsu. You're not just breaking in the engine. You're also breaking in the tranny, transfer case, differentials, ACD, etc.
Go easy on the car for the first 600 miles. I would also recommend around 1200-1500 miles to change ALL of the fluids. You'll be surprised how many metal shavings will come out with the first fluid change (especially in the transfer case).

With 0 miles I wouldn't launch or do a hard drag run, but I would do a nice hard pull and drive at varying engine speeds to seal the rings on the pistons. Word has it break in has a 20 mile window and I always drive my cars hard out of the lot because of that!
Yep...modern day engines don't require true "break in" like they did many years past--engines today are much more finely honed and mated than the rough mated ones way back when. Today it's just the rings sealing in the first 20 or so miles.
Hit it hard with city driving or vary the speeds on the highway. After that 20 mile marker, take it easy again (drive it normally). The drivetrain shouldn't be shocked for some time though--so no launches or quickshifts.

you dont have to save the car,,,like other guys said,,not too much launching but you can try couple times,,,and drive it every day faster,,if you can..but sure the first 400-600 miles dont push too hard.but then you shoul push ,,how much it goes.cuz you have and evo and you dont want to have a lazy car...
not be off-topic or anything but your post was REALLY had for me to read for some reason

sup guys, couple questions, so im new to the "EVO" world, went from 3 rsx's to a tsx and now the EVO X, im reading dfferent things about the 1st oil change, how do i know whos right? Also what is the PSI at while its being "broken in" and what does it go up to afterwards?
thanks
Dan
thanks

, i want to be true to the break in period but what do you mean " weird up top on the RPMS"....?
