yeah, i just found this thread, went out and sniffed the oil cap and smell fuel too. Changed the oil at 1000 miles, and it's at 2000 miles now. Now what?

Not that we know of. Tuning doesn't appear to help. All you can do is change the oil more frequently.

Also, I recently did a 3k change with all miles in warmer months, and noticed no fuel smell. The oil was pretty black, but appears in better shape than previous changes. It probably does have something to do with the warm-up period, from what we've seen. Let it warm up for awhile before driving in the winter, I guess.
