Differential/ tranny blowing

I understand there has been a few cases of peoples differential pins breaking inside the diff and shattering the case and causing leaks and transmissions that got destroyed and was just making this thread to see how common it is or has been because this is the second time it happened to me in 15k miles....yes the car does get launched but no sideways action. It seems every time I hit a 7k mile mark it happens

If anyone knows what has to be done to stop this from happening please speak up, I know buschur makes upgraded DIFF pins. If anyone has had this problem and corrected it what did you do ?

^ got pics?

is it "drifting" or launching that does it, i thought it was more launching - ie sudden shock pops pins slowly...

It happened to me twice. No hard launching, no drifting, some track use and some agressive driving, that's all.
I now have the diff with upgraded pins, but only a few 100s miles so far, so it's too early to make any conclusions.
I have an exedy twin clutch (if this is of any relevance) and the rest of the transmission is stock.
Until now I was using stock tranny oil, now I switched to Motul.

Thanks guys hopefully the pins are the solution...wish a shop could get a little more into detail and work out this fault in the diff....and see exactly what the problem is and what could 110% solve this problem...its to the point where im thinking of kicking the evo to the curb and selling all my parts that are stacked in my room...

Buschur and Shep both fix this issue. Buschur does it with pins and Shep uses another method.

Evo and DSM owners have been sending their transmissions to Shep to get beefed up for many years...just ship it off. I was planning to do that either the next time I need a clutch or if mine should break.

I would love to just ship the tranny out but I use my car daily so I cant have that long of a down time.....I hope the upgraded pins work and hope to see people keep us updated in here with there installed upgraded pins to see if it solves the problem

I replaced my Center Diff pins with the Buschur Racing parts as I was doing the clutch anyway (stock clutch is awful) and heard about these issues. That was at about 9K miles.

I attach pictures of the pins that were removed.

As you can see they are showing signs of fretting on the small pins that hold the large pins into the Center Diff. If these smaller pins shear, the larger pins fly out under the centrifugal force of the clutch and machine their way through the outer gearbox casing (for those that don't know the center diff is in the gearbox, and the front diff is in the transfer case).

I thrash my car every day (if you got it, use it, including the odd hand brake turns, clutch drops and of course sideways action under power with ASC off wherever possible) and now have 15K miles with 300AWHP ( I had 450 for about 500 miles but hated the lag ).

No signs of issues so far. Fingers crossed.

So, who needs to be concerned about this center diff issue? I bought a brand new Evo X and I'm not sure if I should be worrying about this. I already am experiencing the grinding & "notchy" shifting through every gear. Is this differential pin problem something else I need to watch out for? Or is it only for people who launch their cars and have higher power and boost settings?

I just want clarification. Thanks.

Warm up the tranny oil really well by accelerating to almost 7500 RPM and tell me if you still see it. Its just one of those things, these cars just dont seem to be designed for sober driving. Once you really step on it, everything goes away until it gets cool again. Its just the nature of the beast I guess.

i had my pins break after a little aggressive driving in the snow one day, honestly if you live where it snows or if you do any power upgrades id say this could happen to you for sure

I just sent mine off to buschur today. If you havent had your pins break its much cheaper to fix and you dont have the added problem of the hole in the casing.

Idk of any for sure way to tell if your pins have broken, only thing i could think of was my tranny fluid came out like a silver metal slush. if anyone knows of a sure way id love to know it for future problems
