Engine Winding Noise

I just started hearing an odd noise a few days ago. It doesn't make it until the car is very hot...like after doing WOT pulls or driving at higher speeds for awhile.

With the windows closed reving the car slightly, it almost sounds like a winding noise, as if you were cranking an electric motor by hand or something.

As the rpms rise from 1k - 3.5k it becomes more of a hum w/ it being the loudest around 3.3k. Any higher it doesn't get any louder and seems to go away almost.

Car makes the noise when
- reving in neutral w/ clutch out
- reving w/ clutch pushed in
- while driving in gear

Any ideas?

I'd take it to the dealer and make them aware of it (if its under warranty) ... What you're explaining is how I would explain the sound of a failing oil pump :-/ ... Obviously I could be wayyy off base but its certainly possible..

warranty? where? hah...nah, I have full bolt-ons and it's certainly too much effort to put the stock o2/dp and stuff back on for a trip to the dealer =/
