threw a p0304 yesterday. 2008 EVO x 56K original ngk plugs. I removed the spark plug from cylinder 4 and the insulator is flopping back in forth just being held on by the curved piece of metal... gap was perfect. replacing them with new oem tomorrow...well see.

Hey yea who knows, I actually live in Boston now. So my question I cant really tell if there is oil on the piston or not hard to see down there. How do I inspect? If I see oil what does that mean exactly and what caused it? reccommendations? thanks!

note- the plug does not appeared to be fouled has good color to it...I will upload a picture.

UPDATE - replaced all four today with OEM plugs gapped .022, no other issues with cyl 1-3 just the gapping ranged from .023-.026 normal wear I assume. Idle is very smooth now and no more check engine light. I tried to look down the spark plug hole and I mean I couldnt exactly see my reflection in the piston head but there wasnt a pool of oil either. I have no oil consumption issues.

i have had #3 go at 30000klm and #2 go 2000klms later, on a 2010 MR SST with a tune, with the insulator coming down.
noticed it happened after the rev limiter hit maybe 3 times between gear changes from 1st to 2nd.
just the odd occasion when i was too slow to change....

this happened after I bounced off the rev limiter in 1st while doing a powerslide in the rain. Engine wasnt 100% warmed up, knocked up top. Started misfiring and surging at less than 3k rpm after the incident

I recently tweaked my cars tune with a degree more of timing up top and more boost. I have since backed the boost off

this is cylinder 4

Bouncing off the rev-limiter definitely seems to be the cause for these spark plugs failing.

Here's mine. 600whp ef4 setup, no issues till it started missing under boost on a long drive home and then heard a bad noise, like the engine noise got a little louder but thought maybe it was just in my head.

Got home, pulled plugs and this is #1:

Swapped in new plugs and compression test and everything was healthy, car boosts great and makes all the power it did before, but it burns oil like a SOB, getting worse and worse. Pulled head off for a rebuild and discovered this:

Fun times. Let'R buck. Fresh head back together and its still burning oil, ordered a fresh stage1 shortblock from MAP....

I don't recall bouncing off the rev limiter before this at all but I definitely have done so while drag racing (2-step @ 7000) so maybe that weakened them...but that was literally MONTHS prior. Dunno, but this sh*t sucks.

Are there any obvious signs that plugs are on their way out? Before something major happens? This is worrying for me...

Sometimes you'll get a check engine light for a misfire code; I got lucky and got that before any damage was done. Mine broke in the same fashion as prowakeskater's (pic above) where the insulator fell over the electrode. If you have an actual breakage like Scheides above then there isn't much you can do before it's too late. I've been replacing my plugs every 10k miles to help avoid any failures...it sucks because they're not exactly cheap plugs, but $50 every 6 months until we get a definitive fix is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new engine I also try and avoid bouncing off the rev-limiter since that is what caused mine to fail.

Can we update the voting options? It's now well known that with 2011+ X's different plugs are used compared to 2008-2010 X's. Anyone who reports a failure should also put the model # of the plug which is right on the plug itself. It seems to me like the newer plugs have a much higher failure rate. Before the 2011s came out I don't remember reading many threads about gaps closing or electrodes missing.

2012 Evo MR original Mitsubishi OEM factory plugs
plug model # DILKR8B
6

Insulator slid down over the electrode in cylinder #2.

It happened when my SST up shifted from 6th to 5th to about 5K RPM and then I had a back fire then my car became a Subaru. I had been logging days prior and my AFR's and boost was in check during similar RPM spikes on shifting. So I can only attribute it to just random bad luck.

I do not think there is any engine damage. Did a compression test and everything is 155 across the board. Just waiting on new plugs to arrive now.
