Typical bolt-ons with Factory Cat

I'm thinking about doing some of the typical bolt-ons, but the question I have centers on the exhaust, specifically the Factory/Stock cat. Because I've read some reports of High Flow Cats varying effectiveness and/or CEL issues, I want to retain the stock cat. I just picked up a used MAP performance 3" CBE single muffler exhaust.

Just get a 3" gasket, hook it up and call it a day? Or, is there something to be gained by doing a downpipe also?

My thinking is if I decide to go further later on with a turbo kit and built block then I would revisit this choice because it would be more "important".

I know that it at least it does its emission job while I am unsure of HFC's ability in that regard. This is just going by what I've read on here. The area where I live has mobile roadblocks stops with mirrors and sniffers.

Btw, the Muse UICP and VRSF pieces in your sig look great/cheap.
