Need some advice on what turbo to get

Hey guys I need some advice and would love to hear people's experience with these turbos I'm thinking about.

My motor is getting built right now (ran it low on oil like an idiot) and so I decided I might as well get a bigger turbo now while it's being worked on. My tuner asked me what I wanted out of the car and since I was a kid I've wanted a stupid fast evo. So we said 500whp or so. He suggested an FP Black which I was all for! It's been over 2 months now and I have all the parts except the turbo and my tuner is saying FP is taking way to long to build this turbo and I should be thinking about maybe getting a different turbo now.

Now I have so many options I don't know what to do. Either wait for the Black (tuner also knows someone who builds turbos and can build a turbo similar to the Black within 3 weeks) or get another stock frame turbo like a GTX, or Dominator. Or go with a T3 set up either a 6266 or 6466. Or the EFR kits like the 8374. Or maybe an AMS 750xp with a 5858.

I've never had a big turbo car so I'm not sure which turbo I'd like best. I've only been on a stock turbo so I'm not used to lag. I've read a ton about all these turbos and still can't decide! I would really love advice from people who have experience with any of them.

I have a truck that I usually drive around so this won't be my daily but I also don't go around looking to race people. I have a heavy foot tho and like to do pulls here and there and play the car like an instrument sometimes and hit the back roads. I'm 24 now so I don't really drive crazy anymore, I just wanna get pushed back in my seat a few times each car ride and maybe an occasional roll race with some lol

Also what do you guys think about getting a used turbo kit? My build is already about $8,000+ without the turbo, so I'm trying to save money any way I can.

If you want a nice responsive turbo kit set up, a Precision gen2 5558 vband will make 600whp and have full boost below 4500rpm.

An EFR 7670 would spool a smidge faster and have a little better response, but will likely be maxed around 550 to keep the turbine wheel intact.

You could also do a bolt on stock frame Garret gen2 GTX3076r

I haven't researched the PTE 5558 before, how comparable is that to a 5858? So you think a EFR 7670 would be better than the 8374? I haven't read any good things about the stock frame GTX series so I think that's at the bottom of my list. What do you think of the FP Black? My tuner said I shouldn't push this motor past 600whp until I get it sleeved

The gen2 5558 spoils faster and makes more power than the 5858.

The 8374 is a 700whp turbo, and on a 2.0L (which is the only displacement you should be build a 4b11 to) is laggy.

The FP stock frame stuff isn't so great on the X. The stock turbine housing is too small. The MHI18k is great, as the stock frame Garrett GTX3076 is great.

What do you think of buying a used turbo kit? For instance there's an EFR 8374 kit on here that I was looking at. I'm not sure how my tuner would feel if I buy used tho because he's guaranteeing the build. Would you recommend buying a kit used? I'm leaning to getting a T3 instead of stock frame but also trying to save money if possible

If I get an aftermarket manifold does that solve that?

Here is an EFR7670 making 660HP with e85 recently posted on another forum:

He had to push ~35psi to get that though.

I myself am running an EFR9174 .92AR. 540(DJ) (490MD) on a measly 22psi. Max TQ is just before 5000rpm, but I rev out past 8k. Only 22psi because I am still on OEM short block.

You would need surge tank/fuel rail, larger cams and better springs to take advantage of that though. The EFR8374 should hit peak TQ before the EFR9174. I've seen 9174 dyno charts hitting max boost and TQ by 4600rpm with the right tuner.

The Stock manifold is what locks you into the stock from turbos.

That 7670 is making 625whp, not 660. Regardless, EFR results that are clearly approaching the flow limits of the compressor like that one, when posted without turbo shaft speeds, are useless.

I would be very hesitant to buy a used EFR turbo. One that was abused and run outside of it's RPM limit could be ready to have the turbine fall apart and you'll have no idea until you're left with a $2500 paper weight. The seller may also be unaware if the turbo was run without a shaft speed sensor.

An aftermarket manifold will not fix the size of the turbine housing on a stock frame turbo that uses a stock turbine housing.

Wow that's awesome. So then the 8374 should spool even earlier than your 9174. so maybe 4200 area? That's not bad at all for being 700whp capable. I'm really leaning towards that turbo kit. If I got the FP Black I'd have to get a exhaust manifold anyways so It's like I might as well got T3. My head is going to stay stock so I can't rev it out past 7700rpm so I wasn't sure how much I liked the idea of full boost starting at 5500 with the FP Black (from what I've read others say)

For the record -
*If it was me, I would not be interested in a used turbo of any brand. Those same concerns can be applied to any used turbo.
*That 7670 is without a doubt, being pushed to its limit, but OP is only shooting for 500HP. Sorry about the 660 typo .
*To get off of the stock frame turbo's he will need to move to a kit that includes a tubular manifold/downpipe.

Ok, I've bought lots of used things from the forums before but never something as important as a turbo kit. You've made my mind clear on that I need to buy NEW. Now to just finally decide which turbo to get, I haven't narrowed it down too much but I've narrowed it down to PTE or EFR at least. I think EFR is better from reviews I read but also a little more expensive. My tuner has had a lot of experience with PTE turbos and not EFR so he was trying to persuade me to a 6266 or 6466, that's what he said my motor is built to go well with.

I appreciate the advice! If anyone else has their 2 cents of what they'd choose or have had in the past please feel free to tell me! I gotta decide soon and get the ball moving!

If your looking to make 500WHP the 5558 Gen 2 is probably the most responsive turbo option. A 6266 Gen 2 or a 6466 is really a turbo meant for 700+ WHP. If you don't plan to make that kind of power there really isn't any point in having all the extra lag. The 5558 Gen 2 can do around 600WHP should you decide you want to run E85 or race gas as well.

V-Band is my recommendation

Thanks Robert, we are talking whp on a MD right? My tuner says his dyno is a heartbreaker. Reguardless I'm going to do some research on the PTE Gen 2 5558 & EFR 7670 for my 500whpish on 93 and 600ish on E85

No, those are dyno jet numbers. Real numbers. MD's can be easily manipulated to read whatever you want them to read.

User "ddlopresti" is running the EFR 7670 I referenced earlier, and i looks like he just created a dyno results thread.

May want to ask him directly:
