Buschur's EVO X, making some nice power.

As some of you know I finally got off my back side and started working on our EVO X again. The car has not been my favorite project up to this point mostly because it is hard to progress on a car you can't tune when you need to.

A reminder on the car.

2008 EVO X
BR 3", true dual, quiet catback
BR 2.5" upper i/c pipe
BR 2.5" lower i/c pipe
BR 4.5" Race FMIC
BR filter kit with carbon fiber shield
BR 3" MAF pipe
BR offroad pipe
RC 780 cc injectors
Blouch Dominator 2 turbo
BR ported stock exhaust manifold, turbine housing and 02 housing.

The intake manifold, throttle body and downpipe are stock.

I've been tuning the car here and have run it up to a maximum of 25.2 psi of boost on straight 93 octane fuel. The fuel has been in the tank since around August. (Tells you how much it has sat here).

The car runs exceptional on the 780 cc injectors. The stock fuel pump is still in the tank and I have a lot of fuel left, so at this power level it doesn't appear an upgraded pump is needed.

At a peak boost of 25.2 psi the car made 367 whp and 305 ft lbs of torque. You will see below in the dyno sheet that the boost is very stable, still holding 23.05 psi at 7200 rpm. You will also note that the AFR's are dead flat.

The EVO X definetely likes to be run leaner with a lot more timing than the EVO8-9's did. You can see it in the stock tables.

The turbo is very smooth and gives up very little down low to the stock turbo. The stock turbo only made about 298 whp with the rest of the set up being the same.

The car is hitting 20 psi at 3781 rpm.
The car is hitting 25.2 psi at 4500 rpm.
The car still holds 23.05 psi at 7200 rpm.

I am very impressed with the power the car is making. I've never had an EVO8-9 make this much power with these few mods and a reflashed ECU.

Today we are installing Cosworth cams in the EVOX, not a fun job to do. Tomorrow I hope the car is back together and I can get it back on the dyno.

david, can you do a write up on the cam install.thank you

scheides Dec 29, 2008 01:08 PM

Nice dave! Any chance of an overlay with the stock turbo? Looks like a great little combo of parts, that's some wicked power!

Guerillah Dec 29, 2008 01:11 PM

Impressive, cant wait to see the gains with the cams installed. Is it possible to throw some race gas in her after and see what she can really do?

David Buschur Dec 29, 2008 01:21 PM

I can't do a write up on the cams, Dan/Steve handled that and they are almost done now.

I don't want to run race gas in the car yet. I'll get to it sooner or later but right now I want to concentrate on pump gas only. Knowing that I can easily make 500+ whp on pump gas on our dyno with the EVO8-9's set up properly I am in no hurry to run race gas just to produce a number.

My goal right now is to hit 400 whp on pump gas on a safe tune I can use for any car. IF I can do that it will be the most power we've made on a reflash on pump gas on this dyno (on a small/stock framed turbo). That will be a great accomplishment.

Yes, I can do a stock turbo overlay. I'll go get it and post it up in a few minutes.

BTW, after the 1st of the year our EVOX reflashing prices are going to drop down to the same prices as the EVO8-9's. That will be $375 and include over night shipping back to the customer.

very nice.. Cant wait to get this turbo installed. I talked to Nick today and he said he had to talk to you about a few things and call me back.

can't wait to see the numbers with the cams installed...

Dave to all the Evom members who are not familiar with Blouch turbo's could you reassure us on the quality of their products. I think with the success of Forced performance products why would we or why should we chose blouch products? I'm not knocking them at all and going by what you are saying it sounds like it is a nice turbo upgrade. Thank you for your comments...

David Buschur Dec 29, 2008 05:50 PM

JEP, I'd love to be able to write up a great review of the turbo and how I've been running it for 100,000 miles and I've installed 2,000 of them, unfortunately I can't do that.

The fact is, Jarrod made friends with the guys over at Blouch from meeting them a few times. They offered to let us try one of their turbos and I agreed to give it a try. They sent me this turbo probably close to 2 months ago. The car (our EVOX) has been sitting untouched for months. The clutch was slipping, the car wasn't making anywhere near the power I wanted it to and I was just disgusted with it.

Anyway, we finally got a good quality clutch, the Exedy Twin Cerametalic HD and Dan/Steve got the car in and installed it. Then they put the turbo on.

So far I've got about 8 hours of constant run time on it. I was on the dyno for 6+ hours with it, I don't even know how many pulls I made in that 6 hours but it was a LOT. The car was never shut off except for tuning. So far the turbo is workin perfectly and I can say that I am 100% impressed with the power delivery.

I hae nothing bad to say about Forced Performance either. They build kick ass products that we use, run, sell and set records with.

In this case though, this turbo is working out better than any others I have tried on the EVO X and it is what I am going to chose to sell because of it's performance.

I mean look at the dyno sheet I posted of the stock turbo vs. the Dominator.......crap, I just realized I forgot to post it! Darn it. I will get it up there tomorrow, it's in the scanner, just forgot to do it. Anyway, stock turbo with a little more boost, very-very close AFR's and the rest of the mods being the same made 298 whp compared to the chart above. That is a huge gain at less peak boost, same AFR and same parts.

The car at 298 whp ran a 12.29 at 112 mph on the stock clutch. I am thinking 11.50's at 120 on pump gas with this new power.

Also this turbo retails for only $1450.

JEP Dec 29, 2008 06:03 PM

Thank you Dave... I think a little time is needed for this turbo to prove itself but I'll will be watching for results as they become available. And Dave thanks for the price drop on the flashes for the X I hope I read that right somewhere in here???

scottatyamaha Dec 29, 2008 06:05 PM

Buschur fan here, but I have a question.

This confuses me. You state that you are impressed with the power the car makes with very little mods and how it makes more power than the 8/9 with the same mods, yet you are disgusted with it and let it sit for months??? What is going on? Are you really upset with the car because of the wall you hit with the slipping clutch and tuning or is there another problem.

JEP Dec 29, 2008 06:16 PM

I think he was disgusted before BR put on the blouch turbo and the new clutch, after installing the new turbo and clutch is when the larger numbers were put up I also read dave was waiting on a good clutch before bringing the X back to the forefront of his priorities. Why work and tune on a car that keeps slipping the clutch...

David Buschur Dec 29, 2008 06:17 PM

JEP, I don't expect anything to happen to the turbo. CBRD has been using them for quite some time and has nothing but great things to say. Yes, you read correctly on the flashing prices.

scottatyamaha, the car is NOW making a ton of power with very little mods. The car had, however, sat untouched since about the end of August. The clutch was shot and with some other mods we had made I was not happy with the power we gained. So I WAS disgusted and that's why it sat. Now with a good clutch finally on the market for the car, the new turbo on the car and being able to tune it...............I am impressed.

It pissed me off looking at the car sitting for so long. I'm actually super motivated on the car now which will get things moving along very quickly again. We came out strong with the EVO X and then just dropped the ball. Between being wrapped up in my EVO8 and it running 9.0's, customer cars and no clutch for the EVOX it just sat.

Hope that clears things up for you.

David Buschur Dec 29, 2008 06:21 PM

To make this perfectly clear..........in the other thread I mentioned that I had a prototype Red on the car. The power just wasn't there with that turbo. The turbo was built custom and is not the current Red design. The first one we had on at the shootout, which we were hoping to come out strong with the car, failed and smoked when we put it on. That's why the EVO X was sidelined at the shootout. It did give us a chance to loan our MAF sensor to BVP though and they won the event. We got the turbo back and it just didn't make any power, with a bunch more boost than stock (29 psi) we only made 35'ish, more whp than stock. We decided to run the car like that anyway and it ran a 12.3 or 12.4 at 115 mph. The clutch was slipping, the car wasn't making good power I was disgusted and parked it.

This new turbo went on, clutch went in and now the car is like a new beast. The red was shipped back to FP and hopefully something is found to be wrong with it.

There's the full explanation. Basically a series of events that disgusted me and I was also wrapped up in my RS;)

Dave is their any power advantage to have a custom flash at your shop. If so how much more money are we talking about...
