IndyEvo's 11 second X MR blown motor/build thread !!

Storm trooper down v.2

The facts.

I did everything in my power to prevent this from happening. this was not a case of neglect or abuse.

A few days after i got tuned i started having an issue with what i thought was spark blow out. i re-gapped my plugs to .18. did not fix it. a few days later car started stumbling off idle in first, felt like it was out of gas. it threw a misfire code and injector malfunction code at this time. i was super low on fuel so refilled with 93 thinking maybe the 93 would do better than the e85. thought process here was maybe a weak coil was having trouble lighting off the fuel. later that night the off idle stumbling still occured again. same two codes, injector malfunction and misfire both in cylinder 2. i then swapped my plugs, coils, pulled and inspected my injectors. i also moved the cyl 2 inj to cyl . i did not do all these changes at once. i did one at a time trying to narrow down the problem. basically trying to pinpoint a bad injector. this is where i made my only mistake, i should have just pulled the injectors at the first injector malfunction code. but by the time the ecu noticed a bad injector the damage was probably already done during tuning. the problem seemed to be fixed after swapping cyl 2 injector. the problem would come and go but seemed to be gone.

I headed to maryland to race in the real time attack event with jeremy. on the way about 3 hours into my drive the car started losing power while cruising down the interstate. felt like the car was running out of fuel. afr would go off the scale lean. this would last for anywhere from 2 seconds to 15 seconds. during this time i would just try to stay off it. the first couple times it happened i tried putting it in N and free rev it just a little and it would just sputter. sounded like it was running on three cylinders. it threw about 20 misfire codes, cyl 2 and random. when i got to jeremy's i pulled the dw injectors and sent them back to dw. they sent me a new set of 1300cc injectors. i installed them, and made the necessary prelimanary adjustments. fuel was a little off but not bad, just on the rich side. john shafer of akuma motorsports was going to put it on his dyno and get it all dialed in perfect. we where going to finally get to see what the worlds fastest evo x mr was puting down. now it will always be a mystery. i drove it to the gas station, to speed design for ssp graphics, then about 5 minutes into our drive to akuma while just cruising down i95, BOOM! CRUNCH! GRIND! GRIND! GRIND! then silence...nothing but my ssp tanny cooler humming in the distence. i reached up, turned off the cooler then the tunnel vision faded and the silence was replaced with 3, 4, it could have been a hunderd lanes of rohring i95 rush hour traffic! you should have heard the terrific sounds, and seen all the smoke that came from my poor 4b11 as she died a sudden death...death by rod through block. guess what cylinder? el numero dos. that's cylinder number 2 for those who don't read spanish. i was very fortunate to be in good company with jeremy. he called gt performance and they were there with in 20 minutes with a trailer. i layed on the side of i95 and performed another world record for the fastest most dangerous front bumper removal. lol. we were back at gt performance within an hour of blowing my engine. pretty amazing considering we had to hand winch it up on the trailer. huge thanks to gt performance!

I believe the bad injector was giving us problems during tuning. then it started to fail worse. i think the injector failing leaned out cylinder 2 enough times to fatigue it to the point it failed while just cruising down the road. i was logging stuff for fuel trims when it blew. i was at like 160 load @ about 3200rpm @ about 20% throttle.

Details on my up coming build soon. it should still be the fastest x mr in the world. fingers crossed. [/IMG]

More pics of exploded 4b11 after we get it pulled out and disassembled.

Indy,

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

I don’t believe you have tried contacting us, at least not that we have seen. I’m sorry to see that you have taken such a strong stance on the matter when the exact cause of failure has yet to be determined. We do stand behind our product 100%.

As a company, we do not feel that it is fair that public statements are made before any testing is done to verify the claims, but such is the age of the Internet. We are on this forum so the community has access to us. We are not one of those companies who hides behind a website and email.

If you feel the injectors could be suspect, we are more than happy to thoroughly test them and provide any information you want. We will contact you to see if we can be of any help and I can put you in contact with right person.

What failed on the injector you think is bad, coil or a clogged nozzle? What are the details of your fuel system: Did you use E85 safe hoses? Do you have an inline filter? What duty cycles on the injectors? What size injectors? Fuel pressure?

i think the injector was just cutting out or slowing down. i swapped coils. yes i used e85 safe hoses and yes i was on e85. yes i had an inline filter just before the rail. 1500cc injectors. idc's where around 75% if i recall correctly. i have a fuel lab afpr set to 50psi ish.

thanks, chris. i'm sorry about my troubles to.

dw has my 1500's, and have had for almost a week. i have asked about the testing numerous times and it had not been done yet. granted when i first called about the problem it was a friday and you guys where headed to sema the following week. i left a message but my call was not returned. when i called back to following week the receptionist was all i could get. and she was sort of helpful, but she has limited knowledge and seemed to just want to get me off the phone. i have spoke to her before, she is just flat out not friendly. all this is fine and good. the costomer service is not what's at question here. the quality of your product is. i'm sorry it had to come to this, but i felt the community should know.

Sorry to hear about this man you had an nice set up! Everything will work out and I hope DW will step up and do the right thing if indeed the Injectors are faulty. Keep us posted.

Evo VIII 4G63 Nov 15, 2010 03:38 PM

i am using dw 1300's with e85 i am making 670whp i sure hope i dont see an injector failure, i am experiencing a problem once the car gets to around a half tank of gas i experience fuel cut, so maybe it has something to do with the fuel setups on the cars but the shop that built my car had an issue with the fic 2150's so i dont know whats with these injector issues lately on the x's

evoliam Nov 15, 2010 04:02 PM

Very sorry to hear but i guess the positive is that it opens the door to an even better setup.

exhil Nov 15, 2010 04:19 PM
