Don't Use Royal Purple in X Rear Diff

Just wanted to let the Evo X owners know about this. So a friend of mine had a 30K service done on his car at a shop and they happen to not use OEM Mitsubishi Fluids in the Rear Diff. The rear Diff was filled with Royal Purple and in 9k Miles this had happened!!! When I drained the Diff today the drain plug had 1/2in of metal shavings on it if not more. All the fluid came out like water... {thumbdwn}{thumbdwn}

I dunno where rp got a good rep from but everything they make is garbage and has been since day 1. There oil sucks, gear lube is ****e, and the purple ice is purple crap. Mobil 1 isnt great but is miles ahead of rp.

Definitely. If the fluid has done the damage then it's possible the wrong fluid was used. I can't see how the right fluid could've done that. Even though RP won't be liable they can give some info on it.

Which RP fluid was used?
What kind of use does the car get?

This is a Stock 08 X, Just used for daily driving. Contacting the shop that did it, and going from there. not sure what fluid they used but they told him it was Mitsu DiaQueen and its Deff not that. It is Dark Purple.

Yeah I agree. Since buying my GSR I've been paranoid about all the posts I've been reading of stuff breaking, and I don't want to modify my car at all anymore.

I decided to get my first oil change as close to the first 1k miles as I could, and sometime before 5k I'm going to have the trans, TC and Diff done.

TC and Diff I'm going with DiaQueen just because even if it's junk, push comes to shove the dealership will see they did the work and used the fluids they told me to.

The trans, I would like to get away from the notchy 2-3 shift a little. So did some investigative thread searching. I'm thinking either AMSOil or the Redline cocktail with 2 parts MT90, since I live in Phx and see maybe 10 days a year at freezing, but I see 5 months of 115F.

I saw a really good test of AMSOil, Redline, Mobil1, and RP. RP did horrible on the test. #2 was actually Mobil1 and Redline foamed up really bad in a diff, but did really well on lots of other tests. Of course AMSOil aced every test, but this was done at AMSOil test labs.

I'm thinking the redline cocktail will do better than the pure stuff in the test. But back on topic. TC and Diff, Going DiaQueen and praying my Evo was made on a Tuesday or something.

yikes.. i think evos traditionally do not like RP

evo_soul Oct 22, 2011 09:01 PM

I am not sure this can be definitively proven a rp failure without oil analysis to prove it. Also its possible the wrong oil was used.

Ladogaboy Oct 22, 2011 09:13 PM

I'm wondering if they used motor oil instead of gear oil. Either way, I could never justify the extra price for Royal Purple up to this point; I definitely can't now.

Stop wasting time and money trying to reinvent the wheel ,,, either use Diaqueen or this stuff

ASMOIL Severegear 90, 110 or 140

Don't use Royal Purple anything, period.

AndyCT9W Oct 23, 2011 12:09 PM

To be fair, the only evidence that the fluid is RP so far is the colour of it. Also whether it was even diff oil is unknown. It could have been olive oil with food colouring for all we know. We need more info.

Kracka Oct 23, 2011 12:17 PM

It says right in post #1 that RP was used.
