Porting stock turbo?

I'm looking for ways to prevent the power curve from falling on its face above 6k rpm. I was told the main culprit is restricted airflow due to the stock turbo.

Right now i have full boltons, testpipe with no muffler and barely hit 300 awhp on a mustang dyno (hot weather).

Would porting the stock turbo really provide much of a benefit? Also, ceramic coating could help keep heat in the exhaust, but wouldn't that make the situation worse as the flow is already restricted???

If you are going to go through the hassle of taking off the turbo and actually want to make good power with stock like spool characteristics just upgrade it to an FP Green and sell your stock to offset the cost.

^^^ you may also want to let us know what you want from your car, the rpm you want power in and how you will be driving the car--ie DD, track, road coarse etc. Porting the stock tiurbo will give you limited high hp increases. So if your looking for high hp increases you out to consider another turbo that is better suited for that RPM range instead of trying to make what you have work-- or work less efficiently.

I am looking at a MAP turbo. Seams like a good option to me and some people on here like them. Plus they have different options for whatever you want.

All of the stock frame turbos will fall off at the top end compared to mid.. it's just a design of stock turbine housing. If you want a flat torque curve, get a T3 turbo kit

As I mentioned I am looking at the MAP EF2 upgrade. What are the benefits and drawback of getting the compressor and turbine porting?

I havn't really made up my mind, but i think i want to shoot for 400 hp, perhaps with e85. Car would be used for auto-x's with the occasional road course. I've got a road course tune on my car now but i havn't had the chance to stretch its legs.

You can reach 400hp on e85 with stock turbo, I would look at the fp green if I were you and wanted to keep power around there. I also saw a thread recently of an 18g MHI turbo from fp? There is a thread in the dyno section with it on a MR making like 417whp with good spool characteristics and holding out the top end.

That is the question I was asking. They have two different ports you can have done.

zanelefko Jul 30, 2013 12:27 PM

If you are buying the turbo new, I don't see why not to get both port jobs done for 145$ better have it than regret not getting it done while the turbo is off the car.

Can anyone with a ported stock turbo chime in??

bigmatt33 Aug 2, 2013 09:06 PM

I'm wondering how each port option effects spool and hp. The best answer might be given by calling MAP. 1-888-maperformance

egokiller Aug 3, 2013 06:16 AM

i had a ported turbo before i went with a map ef4 if your looking for almost stock spool get a ef 2.5 full porting and coating but stay away from the anti surge no need for it. This turbo will get you to 400 on 93 and 420 450 on e85 just you have to watch your torque. Like everyone is saying if you have the turbo off might as well do it right the first time. Im still on stock block and im on a ef4 but i no im going to build in the future. If it was my car and yur only looking for 400 deff 2.5 look in the dyno section Kracker has one.
