Learned a few things from a Mitsu master tech on checking the Evo X's fuel system
 

The Evo X's user manual calls for periodic check for the car's fuel system for leaks. However, most dealers do not bother. Recently I had the opportunity to speak to a master technician at Mitsubishi dealership and he showed me how to check after putting the car on a lift.

First, check if there is any general gasoline smell coming from the car.

Second, check the exterior of the fuel tank beneath the car for corrosion and leak, as well as around the fuel cap. Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem, because a leak causes anomalies in the fuel system vacuum reading and the ECU will register a code and pop a "check engine" light.

Third, check the fuel lines beneath the car. These Mitsubishi fuel lines are highly durable and he speaks from his experience that they last the entire service life of the car.

Fourth, unlift the car, pop the hood, and check the fuel lines going into the fuel rail and around the engine. It is difficult to get a clear look, so it all comes down to the smell. Sometimes fuel lines in the engine bay do give up and therefore a fire extinguisher is a good idea, especially for modified Evo X's.
