Mysterious rear seat burning?
this happened to me recently.. I was smelling something funny and couldnt quite trace it. i havnt jacked the car up to see, but the foam on my underseat was burnt. not quite as bad as his, but it is burnt.
i will see if i can put the stocker heat shield back on, or fab it to stay on.
i will post pics of mine when i get home.
This is something that has made me nervous over the last couple years after seeing numerous companies making exhausts for the car with no heat shields.
Yeah, I appreciate the weight savings on these exhaust systems and I realize that the stock system is unusually heavy on the heat shields...but they certainly didn't put all of those heat shields on the stock exhaust for no reason whatsoever.
I know that everyone in the auto industry is trying to cut costs anywhere possible, but if MMC hasn't axed the heat shields, there must be a good reason for it (i.e. they've measured temps high enough to melt interior sound deadening, etc. such as what the OP showed).
Just sayin... no disrespect to any of the good companies making systems for the X, but be careful with them!

That exhaust was not long enough for some reason to fit up to my Ultimate Racing bits. The UR Stuff fit perfectly with itself and stock parts, but this just wasn't flying.
What happens is that the rear section of the pipe at the area under the seat makes physical contact with the car. I tried all I could to lower the exhaust to no avail. What we ended up doing was getting an extra flange to use as a spacer between the cat pipe (or test pipe if you have it) to the cat back. So when you look at it, it has three flanges instead of two at the mate up point.
I'd have to measure, but I'd guess the thickness of the flange is around 10mm, and more than enough to correct that issue. The other thing I did was rotate the rubber hangers at the muffler side, and I only use two mount points instead of three. Keeps my exhaust off my car and my kids safe!

If this is confusing, but you are interested, I will take pictures for you tonight. I don't want you to be in a potentially dangerous situation.
i'm from Miami.
here most part of the year is in the 90s degrees, there is more days in the 100s that in the 80s degrees
after a few months dealing with the problem and looking for the best solutions this are my tips.
1. if you buy an AMS single exit exhaust as i did and notice you burn the botton of your rear seats, as I did,
do not seat any big friend (more than 250 pounds) anymore in the rear left side of the car to show him "how fast you can drive"
it's weight on top of the foam agains the metal sheet migh cause to burn or melt your rear seat under his big axx

2.if you still have not burn your seat, you can avoid it installing between your seat and the metal floor some heatshield carpet, tape, antifire paint, etc etc.. you can buy some really cheap at pepboys. $20 for a roll 6'by4'
if you want to go fancy there is some really nice stuff :

3.still paranoide? wrap your exhaust as i also did.
no more heat, you can basicly touch the outside wrap with your hands
or buys some of these:

practice and enjoy it
I am going to take off the back seat to check this out. My wife told me a few times that she smells something burning. I just figured that the smell was coming from someone car on the road. I have HKS Hi-power exhaust.
I can confirm mine does it in the same place. I have the stock/factory exhaust. I pulled up the back seat and it is burned just like the first set of pictures posted. If I go on a short highway trip, I can smell it burning, and if I pull the seat up, that area is so hot you can't touch it. I think it's a fire hazard.. lol. I'm waiting for my X to go up in flames while I'm driving one day..
