How to go from 23mpg Highway to 29mpg
You shouldn't look at the MPG. That number is not reliable. Stick with the range. After you put in your gas, reset the timer and see how many miles you can go. And do the math yourself.
My range is about 210 miles.
My range is about 210 miles.
I get from 20-25 mpg on a 2 hour highway drive I make every few weeks. I am running a Cobb stage 1 with only the intake (ARC Box) modified. Depends on how much gas is in the tank, luggage, and what speed I drive....
I sometimes wonder how much altitude has to do with it.
i also believe that all these people on this board clamingupper 20's or evo 30's mpg are full of crap. the evo is a sup 20mpg car. i know lots of people with evos and they all average 16-19mpg.
i have had my evo for 70k miles and i divide miles traveled with miles gallons put in at every fill up and my live time avarage is 17mpg and i almost always get 17mpg. sure if i punch it a lot i can avarage like 10mpg on a take and i have gotton as much as 24 mpg in a tank where i cruzed on the freeway at 65mph.

when my car was stock i had 250-280 per tank consistently. I am not an aggressive driver, and a shift near 2800-3000 rpm. I cruise on the freeway going 60-65mph keeping my rpm at 2850-3000. Also driving 40-45 mph with 4th-5th gear locally can give me at least 18 mpg in average. I think all it matters is your right foot. Normally the breakdown goes like this. First bar of the gauge can drive up to 55-60miles. First half (when the gauge is at 50%, but we know it's not true) I can have about 180-200 miles, and second half I generally have 50-80 before I hear the "ding." I drive spiritedly too, but just not too often.
When I first bought the car I even had better mileage, at least 15-20miles more per tank, but after I got the recall done for my return fuel rail it became less. I posted my thoughts on some relevant subjects that some owners were experiencing the same thing, but I read that mpg and the recall were irrelevant.

I love all the responses to posts like these saying people are liars or don't know how to add... I'll use the same post I did over at the other EvoX site, seems there are even more **** slingers over here. There are plenty of people getting 24-25 mpg on the highway, how difficult is it to believe that getting 2-3 above that is impossible with the right combination of driving style, tune, and modifications? if you drive full throttle at every opportunity then of course mileage is going to suffer.
On my trip to the 2009 Buschur Shootout I was averaging 70 mph and went 350 miles with 13 gallons used which is just about 27 mpg, while my dash read at 28.x something. Sure the dash MPG estimate is always a bit optimistic but if I reset it on a flat highway at 70 mph with cruise going it does calculate real time usage at 30-31 mpg consistantly and if I actually drove an entire trip like a total ***** I would expect to get 28-29 mpg overall.
So while I don't trust it 100% it still gives you a rough idea of where you are at, around town during normal work weeks it still averages low to mid 20's. If I'm testing a new tune you can throw the MPG contests out the window as I'm lucky if I hit 20 mpg...
Much has to do with the way you drive the car, I get 7 mpg at the track but if you tune the lower load cells (0-70%) at cruise with ~3* higher timing you can gain MPG and if you have a larger turbo that allows your entire engine to operate more efficiently and not instantly jump into boost at light throttle you will gain MPG. AFR's during spool and MIVEC tune also have an impact of how much fuel is being used.
I will be keeping carefull logs during the One Lap of America trip as well, the only difference being that it will have an extra ~500 lbs of weight in it with an extra driver and gear when not on the track.

I've had Evos for a time now and used them in a consistent way through my mods. Both my cars have had the same consumptions. Here is it:
Both took 18 MPG pure (slow) city driving, calculated on 6200 miles.
After about 5000 miles with the first one I switched to an TBE with highflow cat. Same driving pattern and same throttle handling gave me between 20.1-20.45 MPG every tank. This is just the exhaust change. About 4000 miles of city driving later on (sold one of them), I got one tuned with mods in signature. Now it took between 22-24 MPG with city driving and car number 2 actually turned into a hwy/country cruiser and it get between 24.5-27.6 MPG on a regular basis.
My best achieved was doing between 60-62 MPH for 250 miles straight, it took 30.5 MPG. I'm sorry to say though, if you take it to 65-70 MPH my consumption goes all the way down to 21-22 mpg. This is not an exact science, just cause I've had Evo 8's and this is the 10. But I'm pretty sure that they still limit the boost by having a narrow exhaust in the same way as on the 8.

I'm only getting 26 on my trips to phoenix give or take a few points.... everyday back and forth to work i am still getting 24-24.5 and thats passing through 6 to 12 stop lights depending on traffic and accidents.... Vegas has toooooo many crappy drivers that dont give a flipping care if there are any other people on the road. I pass no less than 2 accidents a day on a 19 mile commute.
I am using 93 octane and the Perrin stage 2 map. Using tank based calculations, I have averaged anywhere from 20.0 to 27.7. My average is around 21.5 with a mixture of city and highway. That 27mpg tank seems to be a fluke, as I haven't gotten beyond 25.3 since. When I take long trips I tend to go the speed limit or slightly over, so 60-65mph.
I think with extremely conservative driving (55mph) and a long straight road, you could get 27-28mpg. Since nobody really drives under those conditions, I think 25mpg is a good figure for a tuned Evo with all highway driving.
