Am I crazy? / introduction
Just wanted to say hello to all and now that I finally got around to registering I have a dilemma I hope this forum can help me with.
I (as I am sure most of you are as well) am a performance addict... Now, that being said I change cars fairly frequently and often end up tuning / adding bolt ons.
Recently I have had 5 German cars in a row (last 3 BMW's), I went from an e46 M3 SMG (fun, but the novelty wore off and fixing it was $$$), to a 135i (all bolt ons, over 400rwhp) and now have a 2008 M Coupe (fun, but NO torque, limited aftermarket support and small). My issue is that I miss the fun of the turbo that I had with the 1, and recently have been looking at a 2010 Evo GSR. I am trying to think more practically as I live in the northeast and winters suck, and 2 seats are not the most practical thing in the world either.
I would like to know if you guys think I am crazy for thinking about this switch, and if anyone has made a similar transition, do you regret it?
I test drove both the GSR and MR this weekend and I can honestly say I have never taken corners that fast on the streets before, a very confidence inspiring car.
One last thing, I am not the typical BMW badge-*****, I am a fan of good cars not who makes them - so that is not an issue either!
Thanks in advance!

I also had a 135i. Mine had a PROcede and dual cone intakes. It was a bit quicker than my full bolt on X at speed, but on a racetrack, the Evo will obliterate it. You also get four door utility, the sure footed of AWD in winter (since you live up north), and probably the best steering this side of $100k. Go for it and welcome to the site.

is it time for you to get a 4 door?
Now youhave to decide on teh MR or GSR. If you are all about making as much power as possible and just plain performance, get the GSR. If you like to more High-End feeling (i assume you do with BMW's) then the MR might just be perfect fit.

Not really, I don't have any issues with 2 seats other than wanting to transport more people occasionally.
I have read up on the GSR vs. MR and I would plan on tuning it possibly heavily, i.e. upgraded turbo. So the MR is probably out, as it seems like it is a PITA to get the tranny to accomodate that kind of power. I don't care about the high-end feeling, my M coupe without nav has absolutely no creature comforts (not even heated seats - very stripped) so I don't see the GSR interior and issue.
BTW meat, I LOVE your car! Probably one of the main reasons I am looking at an X.

If torque is what you're after, get the GSR.
Having said that, the evo experience is going to be very RAW compared to any of the BMWs you've owned. You may absolutely love it or you may absolutely hate it. There is no middle-ground.
Also be prepared to deal with any and all problems at your expense even if you're under warranty. Its not gonna be as stupid expensive as the BMWs, but it will not be cheap either. Its very reliable for what it does, but there are some issues you should be aware of before buying the evo. Looks like you're doing your research well, so I'd expect that you know many of them already.
Also, you're not gonna have the off-the-line performance like a TC V6. The evo can be slow off the line during DD conditions unless you're launching it. A test drive will help you decide better. The good thing about it is that you can literally transform the car to your liking completely (powerwise and interior comfort-wise) without breaking the bank (at least for someone with 3 BMWs in the past).
Also, considering this is an Evo forum, your poll results are going to be biased in favor of "Do it, the turbo power is calling you...".

to me the sure footedness of the evo is unparalled... so in the handling department, the evo is a winner..
in the power department - the evo will win hands down simply due to the cost
looks - not much said here the M series is a beautiful car
comfort - its a performance car, who the hell needs comfort
weather related - again, evo is a winner
rarity - the M wins this category
Drivers Car - the M wins this category as well - yes i love the evo but it can make a decent driver look good - driving a rwd car and being fast with it take a good driver.
overall I don't think I could drive a car not as nimble as the evo. its the most sensative car i have driven besides a lotus exige. The power to cost modifications of an evo makes it a much easier choice for me as well.

I would do it. My M3 was the worst car I ever owned. Thing was a electrical nightmare. My Evo is just more fun than my E46 was. The M is a cooler status car but the price to mod is silly and limited.
oh and they do have aftermarket support....
