Meh...Cali has disadvantages if you're into polluting the environment and making people behind you sick with your catless fumes dirtying your rear bumper. Another one people like to bring up is earthquakes. Yeah, we get one (that matters) every 10 years. Another is the high tax rate.

Here are good things about living in Cali:

a. The weather (I don't know what shoveling snow, scraping windhields and wearing gloves feels like; a battery warmer--what's that?)
b. The women
c. If you have the money, it is one of the most sought after places to live in
d. We're not fat (anyone see that Yahoo article the other day?)
e. Fewer racists
f. We know what a beach looks like
g. The women
h. Just better looking people overall; I've traveled throughout the country and hoo boy there are some ugly *** states out there; especially if you live in a 4 cornered state

Truth!

I live in N.OC/LA and i agree with most of this list =) i do think we still have our share of fatass's out here, and in any big city you'll find great looking women (ever been to NYC? wooooweee! left and right up and down, you see gorgeous women who are super stylin all day e'erday! HOWEVER! we get girls in bikinis ^_^)

Also, regarding our laws. As long as you don't drive like a dip****, GENERALLY the cops don't bother you. Yes, sometimes you do get that ******* cop and can't get out of the ticket, but i think you can't really escape from ******* cops cuz exist everywhere =P

i went through this with my ix...

i got a smog/emmission ticket for, intake, BOV and no cat, exhaust and yada yada

had to go to a referee, it was $35 for (2) runs...my exhaust when it started was at 120db, at there test, since they didnt have a way to test AWD, they held the car at 4k rpm no load...db was 93.8...so i was able to keep my exhaust, for everything else, i had to put back to stock, got it visually inspected and passed, went to court house, paid off ticket, and went over to my friends garage and put everything back

i held on to the paper work and got pulled over a few times, showed them the paper work and "have a nice day"

and this is in Cali

now with my X...i just took of the wing for less attn..so far so good

This is what I'd do if I were in your position:

I would put the factory exhaust back on...

Then I would get a dB reader (they use these at my local mx track, ama rules).

Then I would measure the readout of the factory exhaust vs the aftermarket exhaust.

Make sure to video it and document it very clearly. I would take that evidence with you and show that your dB is within reason. Put a factory cat on (not sure if you have one or not). Prove to them that you are within reason.

I would also tell them you were rear ended and couldn't afford a new exhaust. Get them to sign off on that your exhaust is within reason, and keep that in your car with you at all times incase you get pulled over again for it.

If they still aren't ok with that, then run stealth man! Unless you're going for big power, an exhaust isn't going to do a whole lot. Run a more efficient front, UICP, LICP, FMIC, Drop-in / Intake, Tune, Cams, 3-port. Forget the whole exhaust thing and make next to the same power

only reason i say this is because i too received the SAME violation 2 years ago IN CALIFORNIA when i had my subaru with HKS Carbon Ti. I merely paid 178 dollars and poof no going to stock, no ref, nothing on my record =P However, the cop did mark on my ticket "correctable" on the ticket. I just didnt have the time / want to deal with the hassle of going back to stock since i didnt have the stock parts at that time.

And OP, i think you're engine bay is fine, you're not getting emissions checked out so they don't have any business going through your bay. For sound testing i think its just a decibal test.
ya im from maryland and state laws and regs can differ very very much, im just stating from my personal experience when this happens normally this is one of those not a fine tickets but a get your car fixed or get screwed tickets and people normally just bring in there car and they check what was marked on the ticket to be checked and if it seems approved or safe then they let em go. And in his case it seems to me that there is no reason for them to poke under the hood when his ticket is stating he needs to see a state approved facility that will check to make sure his vehicle is within there noise levels. I would just put the cat- and catback on, its honestly like an hour max. They may check to see if you have a cone filter but id say that even seems far.

How can you actually pay for it, I mean does it stated in your ticket that you have to pay certain amount? did you just went to the court straight away without bothering going to CHP/Referee?

So far you have gotten good advice on this matter. I would put back stock parts for the inspection. The vehicle code states:

V C Section 27151 Modification of Exhaust Systems
Modification of Exhaust Systems
27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

But technically, if you are below 95dbA you will be ok that is for the cat back only.

Based on the parts listed I would change back to stock the following, unless you have a CARB number, which I think you will not:

-UR DP
-ARC Intake
-SARD BOV
-Turbo inlet
-Tomei UICP

Have you never gotten a ticket before? (no offense seriously) if you got the ticket recently, you'll get a courtesy notice in the mail to remind you about your ticket. In that courtesy notice you'll be given the fine amount if you just want to pay the fine.

you can do 2 things:

1. Wait for the courtesy notice.

2. call up the court house and ask how much the fine is. Fines went up twice since 2 years ago as far as i know... so i might be more like 250 bucks or even 300 since the time i paid my dues.

If you don't get the courtesy notice, you HAVE TO CALL THE COURTHOUSE. you're not excused from the ticket if you do not receive a courtesy notice.

I would just pay the ticket. F*** them for telling what you can and cannot do with your car. Safety is one thing, but sound? Come on... It's like giving someone who drives and SUV a ticket for their headlights being too high off the ground and shining into someones rear view mirror. Man those states **** me off. Pretty soon they'll come to your house at night and tell you you can't turn your porch light on because it can distract someone driving down your street.

I'm just happy my state is not retarted like that.
