Blue painters tape help!!
Tape, like this:

The logic behind it is to put the strips of paint parallel with the wind passing over. The strips on the hood should go from front to rear, not from headlight to headlight. The order of placing should be from the sides of the hood towards the center, with the last piece being in the very center.
Oh btw, it held up well even after seeing rain on 3 separate occasions, from LA to Vegas to Denver to Chicago.

Two rolls and one spare for spot-fixes along the 2,000 mile trip. Not cheap, but must've saved me from turrible rock chips and sand blasting with the areas I was heading through (on pieces that flapped over, you could literally see sand grit embedded into the sticky side of the tape).
I think I paid $6 per roll at a Wal-Mart in LA.
