The stock cat is a bit restrictive, so you want to get rid of it, if you are looking for better exhaust flow.

A high flow cat and a test pipe are not very different, given that the engine is stock or nearly stock. You will observe the difference in exhaust flow, if you have a high boost turbo and rev high.

Sound-wise, I haven't observed any difference between cats and test pipes. I cannot tell whether the car is equipped with a cat or not by just listening to it.

100% with you on the restrictions of the stock cat. I might upgrade to a HFC but I am not sure if this move will cause me to overboost. Maybe that would cause by a widemouth downpipe more than a hfc...

One step at a time for me...
