2011 STI owner, making the switch
I'd like to get back into a 2006 STI, but I'm not going to find one with the mileage I want that isn't slaughtered. I've been looking for about 6 months and I'm not sure I can justify that kind of money loss by going back to the car I traded.
Found out my previous one had minor frame damage even though it was certified with a clean carfax and my alignment could never be 100% so that's why I traded it in on the new one.

I had been a long time Mitsu fanboi. Ever since the 90's. I have now bought 4 new Mitsu vehicles. But this GSR is my last. Mitsu has really screwed me on warranty issues in the past. In their defense it has been because of poor dealerships in my area. But they dont seem to care either way.
If you are that concerned about ringland failure then you will feel much better just switching up. Overall Mitsu makes solid cars. But if you ever need warranty work, they can be very difficult at times.
I understand your concern though. I was really leaning towards the sti (as I am very done with Mitsu). But that ringland failure really was the ultimate reason why I couldnt purchase the car.
Overall though I am pleased with the Evo and do enjoy driving it. Mitsu might have issues with their cars here and there. But they make very solid engine/tranny combos as long as you take care of them.

Based on some feedback here and a few other places from owners it is clear the real, raw, performance version of the Evo is the IX.
Well that brings me right back where I was in 2006 when I bought my STI for the first time, when I came to my own conclusion (with the help of motortrend and top gear lol). Anyway after being let down by the responses on the new Evos, I found something I never thought I would - a blue and gold 06 STI with almost no miles, 100% stock 1 owner. So I'm going to pick it up tomorrow! Actually managed a pretty good deal and now I'm out of debt too!

Any reason to be scared of going stage 2 after break in? Or any big issues associated with it?
I'm pretty much sold on this, I just really don't want any regrets. It's good to hear back from someone who had an evo, then sti, then evo again. Glad I'm not the only one.
It's going to be a daily driver, but I live in the city so only 5 gears is a non issue as I don't even remember the last time I used 6th gear.
My woman has a hatch so cargo room isn't really a problem either. I'll check out that other thread that was linked though.
The only thing that kind of worries me is the idling issue and 3rd gear grind so far.
350hp on the clutch shouldn't be a problem, I just want to go dp/exhaust with a tune and I don't think that gets near the 350 mark
Thanks for all the info so far.
Did anyone opt for the xion or whatever they call it coating for the paint? I did on the STI, but not sure I would again...

If you get newer than 2008, 3rd gear isn't a problem. Also AMS shifter bushings really help with this. In my 2011 I have 0 grind, 0 notch.
If you're buying new, don't get any of the offers from the dealership. Just get in, get your car, get out. You can always get better deals later. Lo-jack, coatings, extra warranties, etc etc etc. Leave it all be.
Best advice I can give, is master the car until you mod it. Figure out what you want done to your personal taste, not what someone on the forum did. Is it understeering? Get a RSB. Is it hesitating? Get a tune. Is it not stopping fast enough? Better brake pads. Just enjoy the car for what it is. It's basically track ready off of the show room floor.
Edit, just saw you got a subbie. Enjoy =)
Loving being back in the 2006 it is literally 200% better than the 2011 and driving both back to back like that makes it very obvious.
Yeah, I told the mitsu dealer I was working with that I preferred a 2011 to a 2012 due to slight performance differences and they LITERALLY said to me:
"it's amazing what people will say just because they can't afford the more expensive car
performance difference???? right. good luck."
this was http://www.donherring.com/ in plano texas, do not go there with your business. i called the guys manager to tell him what the sales person said to me and the manager SIDED WITH THE SALES REP. WHAT!? I said you just lost 35 grand.

Not sure where you heard the 2012 has a performance difference over a 2011 but there isn't any. There was a slight bump from 2010 to 2011 with a different tune and new exhaust. 2011 and 2012s are identical on the dyno.
^^ check the dyno results section migs. There are accusations/rumors from a certain tuner that Mitsu may have put Ralliart cams in the 2012s or changed something because they have not made as much power at their shop..
I have seen back to back pulls. They were off by like 3whp. I wonder if that was a one off deal.
Reading the thread from Aaron, I'm fairly certain the RA cams and Evo cams are the same. Wondering if it's something else.
The thing is, the ones I saw pulled were factory Evos, no mods.
