Need help with buying an Evo

Hey guys,
I will be purchasing an evo this year, or the next. I want a GSR, either brand new or low kms used.

I'm looking for one with the sunroof, and the sound system that the mr comes with, and the aero kit.

Could someone shed some light on this aero kit? Is it something the dealer could just add, or do I have to find an evo that already has that?

Also, what year do you guys recommend? 2008, 2010 or the very new ones?

Is there anything I should know about buying an evo new or used?

btw I'm in BC, Canada.

Thank you so much!

not sure how different usdm evo's are vs canada (if anything), but if you have the budget definitely go 2010+. I had an 08 X and now have an 2011 and love the 11 much better, better gauge display and not being the first year of a new car model. Can always add the aero kit later, but then its $$$$. I don't have the aero kit, don't need it ha.

Any year is fine, but its always a good idea to get the newest one available.

The Aero kit can be added any time. On the +12 models the side skirts no longer come with the "exterior package". You can add them later though. The 2011+ has the leather and sunroof option. But it sounds like you want the SS and SL packages together..

Hello

To best answer your question, I am a certified Auto tech so I will try to best assist you in making your choice. First off just like any new car or new model I should say is always best to purchase at least a year or two after its first time in production. This is because not in all but some cases in the first or second year of a production vehicle it is the most common to have flaws which then for the later models the manufacture tries to fix them as best as they can. I have an 08 EVO X MR that I bought for $20k under 40k miles. Then during my time off from work I am moding the car as much as I can to the point where its still a safe daily. Reason I bought it during its models first year of production is because after doing tons of TSB/recalls and other types of consumer research there was nothing major to scare me not to go ahead and buy it.

Besides that, the aero kit is a nice feature but isn't mandatory and with the EVO X's in general becoming more common they are not to hard to find with the aero kit already on when buy used. Your best bet is to go to an auction like I did or go to a private seller and buy the GSR for so much less then at a dealer with no hassles. These cars are very reliable when you take care of them as you should and will not be any sort of lemon on you. Therefore don't worry to much about the warranty for a GSR, if you were looking at an MR with the SST then the powertrain would come in handy if there were any sort of issue, but in my case I can fix it myself.

If you are just going to keep the car stock then there are no worries for you, very strong and reliable, even a few mods won't hurt its reliability either when done the proper way. Just keep up to date with maintnance and change your oil every 3k miles and you'll be fine, I change mine every 1500k.

Hm. And here I was thinking that the consensus was that avoiding the original timing chain was a wise thing to do.

And maybe auctions are run differently in Florida, but around here you'd have no real chance to see if any warranty-problematic mods had been made. In some cases, you'd have no chance to check if the transfer case was already whining like a 20-year-old who had just spent every penny he had to get an Evo X and it had a dead transfer case and no warranty, which is why it was at the auction in the first place. Bet it's even more different in BC.

ps. a big hello to the guys and gals at VCMC, Akielies

Yea thats true, but you can find transfer cases for the evo x for around $1k. You can always look up the VIN of the car and see its history before anything. If your uncomfortable about auctions then go ahead and go to a private seller and start to negociate, why pay more at a dealer for the same thing with more hassles.
