ex STi owner, looking to get into an Evo X
Hello guys,
I've had a 2010 hatchback STi, sold it because the engine broke twice and was replaced by the dealer under warranty. Found out the dealer was doing the maintenance of the car as a normal impreza and wouldn't do it differently even after the engine blowing up twice. Sold it and drive my boring daily since a year now.
Went to look for an exciting car, my search took me towards the 350Z and 370Z. Decided to go to the Nissan dealership and ask how much is a new one. Nissan accepts cars as trade-in and the dealership sells those traded in cars as well.
Met the used car salesman and told him to notify me if a sports car comes in. To my surprise he said that a 2009 Evo is coming in soon. The owner has already traded it in for a new Infiniti car. They are waiting for the guy to get delivery of his special ordered car and then they will recieve the Evo.
They showed me the inspection sheet they had done and valued the car. These people go by the depreciation rates and are willing to sell it for about $14k. Car has done 115k kms and is a MR.
Today they have asked the owner to give the car for me to check out. Waiting for their call to go and do that.
The dealer inspects the frame for accident damage and doesn't accept the car in that case as their rule. They check the engine for compression and just try the car. They have done all this and the engine is healthy, gearbox is fine and frame has no damage.
Car is in red color, not my preference but it works. I have 7k ready as a downpayment and just need to see and drive the car before booking it for me with a payment and of course negotiating a little before doing that, also a major aspect would be the condition of the car as well.
Other local ads are selling the same model evo for about $25k. For my country rates this is a good deal for me if all is well and wonderful.
So i might be an evo owner in this 2 weeks time if all is good and well.
It will be something new to drive a car with an automatic double clutch tranny with so much power and good handling. My plan is to make this my daily since the commute to work and back involves a mountain pass with hairpins and such, should be smiling when i get to the office. I'm 31 now, me and my lady are expecting our first born in September.
Hope to get a good car and be part of this evo community soon.

Well, don't forget to tell the lady that the evo x has child restraint spots in the back seat, so it's a family car!
But seriously, one other thing to check on the evo that the dealer might miss, look through the engine to see if it looks like anything was taken off and put back on. Like the hose clamps and other bolt attachments, this can be a sign that it was modded and put back to stock. I personally would look under the car too to check for scraping and damage on any suspension components.
Since you mention mountains/hairpins for you daily commute, you might want to look into some decent tires for the car. Not everyone puts the right tires on the evo and without good tires, the power and handling are wasted, so consider looking into some performance tires. All-seasons opinions are kind of split around here, but it might be worth looking into if you have a range of conditions, in which case I would recommend Continental DWS06. Make sure it's DWS06 and not DWS.
But other than that, welcome (most likely) to the group!

Thank you guys.
I got to see and test drive the car today. It's funny, the car belongs to a friend and I actually drove it before deciding on the STi back then to see if I liked it. Full service history is available and all services were done at the dealership. Car has AMS Upipe i think it's called. The turbo spooling can be heard and I guess there's a BOV because it makes a loud pssssssshhhhh.
It drove straight, brakes engaged very well. I have pix but for some reason cant post through the phone. The paint is nice, clearly it was regularly polished.
Cons, the carbon fiber wing and the other MR thingy on top of the rear glass, are fading, the clear coat has given up on those 2 pieces. It's not a big deal for me.
The spare wheel is enkei but 4 wheels on the car are bbs. I dont know if the owner still has the enkei wheels or he sold them.
Currently in the negotiatiin phase. Hope i get a deal better than i stated here.
BTW i loved every second of driving that, i guess driving a family sedan with a cvt for a year does that... Lol

AMS U-pipe? I'm guessing you mean the pipe that goes over the top of the engine? We'd call it a UICP, Upper intercooler pipe. Those help with throttle response over the OEM ones which are only half aluminum.
As for the BOV, did it have aftermarket intake on it? the metal piping used in an aftermarket intake can make the OEM diverter valve sound like a BOV. But if it has something other than a bland looking dull aluminum DV, it's probably aftermarket. I'd recommend going back to a diverter valve set up since the MAF sensor and the engine expect all that air to get back to the engine instead of venting to atmosphere. It doesn't really hurt the car, but you'll run pretty rich right after releasing throttle.

I have known the owner for some time and I remember when he actually bought the car, gave me a test drive but I went the STi route because of the transmission, had a manual craze and Evos sold in my country only came with the SST I think the dual clutch is called. I know that he didn't have money to mod the car more than what is on it. There are carbon fiber bits and pieces and actually no professional shops to do that kind of work, but will again check for this nonetheless.
Yea my country, Oman, is a mountain and desert region. No snow and rain 3 to 4 times a year for a day or two. The roads are amazing here! We don't get winter tires lol. The car right now has Dunlop SP sport max. Are these any good?
Continental is the most expensive tire sold in my country, but my friend can hook me up since he owns a tire franchise. Will need them to accept my offer first though, fingers crossed!

Met the owner direct, made him an offer. Let's see.
BTW, car has Seibon CF Hood painted red because cops don't like those here.
The door's color in the picture showed different because he actually got the rear panel and door painted, he crashed into a wall.

Get a compression test for the engine and the SST checked by the dealership or an Evo specialist.
